Level 30 Mask
inspired by the need for a halloween costume
[note: this is not exactly a proper tutorial, but more of a foundational template upon which to unleash your creativity.]

the petroleum jelly is to create a protective barrier between your face and the plaster of paris. allow drying time between layers or the structural integrity of the mask will be compromised. when done, cut off the lower jaw. drill sockets for the teeth. align, angle, or offset the sockets or shorten the teeth enough so they don't hamper the motion of the mask jaw (more on that in a minute). to make the teeth, break up a chicken bone in to shards and glue into sockets. be careful, as the bone is *really* pointy. i made a few unwilling blood sacrifices to the craft deities working on this part. attach one end of whatever spring mechanism you decide on to the corners of the mask's jaw (i used a cut up a bungee cord), and attach the other end as far back and up (the aim is to create resistance in the spring that to the back of your head) as needed so the the inside of mask's jaw cups your jaw (so that the mask follows your jaw movements when you talk! spooooookey!) if you want, modify it, sand it a little with 120 grit to smooth it out, or, if this project got you all geeked out, give it a coat of bondo to sand down to get a perfectly smooth surface. get out the paints. choose a color/ pattern scheme that you feel reflects your darkest self, your inner demons, or, if that's not your bag, do the exact opposite (for a friendlier, maybe more bizarre look, break off the points of the chicken-teeth so they are not so scary and maybe round the corners. Add something strap-like offset from the edge of the mask, around the temple area, to hold it onto your cranium. oh. right. if you haven't yet, you can go ahead and wash the petroleum jelly off of your face :3

I must say: this is a really well designed mask.
