Jealous? - Make your own!
So, I'm in college now, and walking between classes in the chill autumn air, I found myself wishing for a hat. I also adore pandas, so I decided it was time to design a hat for myself.

You can also find this project on Ravelry!

  • Step 1

For my hat, I used Vanna's Choice yarn. I used about 2/3 of the black and 2/3 of the white skein.

I used an H/8 size crochet hook for this project.

  • Step 2

First, you need to start with a magic ring and increase until your hat is about as wide as you want it.

Following these instructions, you should end up with a flat circle that pretty much covers the top of your head.

6 sc in magic ring (6)
inc in each sc around (12)
*inc in first sc, sc in next sc* rpt around (18)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc* rpt around (24)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc* rpt around (30)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 4 sc* rpt around (36)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc* rpt around (42)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 6 sc* rpt around (48)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 7 sc* rpt around (54)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 8 sc* rpt around (60)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 9 sc* rpt around (66)

Optional rows, if your hat seems too small
*inc in first sc, sc in next 10 sc* rpt around (72)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 11 sc* rpt around (78)
*inc in first sc, sc in next 12 sc* rpt around (84)
    ...

    Step 3

Now, just sc all the way around.

This is after a few rows of sc.

Try the hat on! You want to make sure it's not too small / too big before you get too far.

    Step 4

    Keep single crocheting.

    This is about 20 rows.

I decided to stop here, but it's up to you.

  • Step 5

    Now, make the ears!

This pattern will give you a little cup shape. If you flatten it, it should like like a panda ear!

    1) 6 sc in magic ring (6)
    2) inc in each sc around (12)
    3) *inc in first sc, sc in next sc* rpt around (18)
    4) *inc in first sc, sc in next 8 sc* rpt around (20)
    5 - 8) sc in each sc around (20)
    9) sc in first 3 sc, dec in next sc, sc in next 15 sc, dec in next sc, sc in last 3 sc (18)

  • Step 6

    Now, sew on the ears.

When I attached mine, I flattened the hat to try to sew them on as straight as possible.

Make sure you check to see if the ears are even before you tie your ends and cut them!

    Step 7

Later, I added about 10-12 more rows of black, so that I could have a folded brim for my hat.

I thought the hat looked a little unfinished. I love the brim. Plus, it make the hat more snug and keeps your ears warmer. ^_^

When I folded the brim, I sewed the top edge to the hat so it would stay folded.

If your hat is all one color, you don't have sew it to keep it folded - you can just fold it yourself when you wear it.

If your hat is more than one color, however, like mine, I think sewing it is best, so that you don't accidentally show the part were you changed colors.

  • Step 8

    Enjoy your hat!

@Mickie - I have not. I've never used a loom to crochet anything. Maybe you should try and show us your finished project! ^_^

@Holly - Oooh. Looks like cut-out-and-keep is having issues. All the steps used to be there.
