Get awesome hair. You know you want to.
There are lots different types of ways to get dreads but i used the backcombing method...

The time it takes really depends on how long and thick your hair is. The first time i got dreads i had hair a little more then halfway down my back and it took about 8 hours with 2 people working on it at the same time.
the second time when my hair was right above my shoulders it took about 4 hours with one person working on it and taking breaks every now and then.
once you have made all your dreads just sit back, relax and never brush your hair again!
they are going to unravel in the beginning but they will knot back up in time. Make sure you remember to use residue-free shampoo and NO CONDITIONER.
A lot of people think you have to use wax to have good looking dreads but this is NOT TRUE. Wax gets all built up inside the dread and will most likely never come out. plus, it makes your dreads look oily and gross.
If you want to keep your dreads tidy looking and round you can roll aloe into them and palm roll them alot.
apple cider vinegar is a really great thing to use to deep clean your dreads everynow and then.

so, i think thats about all you need to know when you have dreads...hopefully it helps!

You Will Need

  • Step 1

What you do to start is wash your hair with non-residue shampoo (you have to use that kid of shampoo when you have dreads because if you don't they will get all this sick build up and grow mold and it just gets horrible.)

  • Step 2

Once its dry you can section your hair or just grab random chunks, it just depends on how many dreads you want and what sizes you want them to be.

  • Step 3

To start backcombing: Hold the chunk of hair in one hand and with the other hand start combing upward starting at the roots and moving down to the tips when you think the roots are tight enough. Turn the hair every now and then so the dread will be round. Keep Combing upwards untill the whole chunk is knotted enough to stay in the shape of a dread.

It's not that bad to be bald. I had to buzz my hair off to get rid of my mohawk. I really like your dreads, though. I used to want them, but never really thought of doing it myself.

You know you dont have to chop all your hair off to remove dreds. I got mine out by soaking in conditioner (VO5) and then combing it thru. It was long and painful, but better then being bald.

Noo... When I see things like this I kinda start feeling resentment about cutting mine off 5 months ago Happy, I think I'll just start growing my hair out again.

Your's look real cool, I love the colors Happy. Good how to, as well.

to the comment of chealz i would say, that you can defitly wear them, and you dont look bad.

but i have to say i dont like dreads, although you look nice with them

thanks for the how to

I'd just like to kive you kudos for being the only person that i've seen on this website to commit to real dreadlocks. not that there's anything with fake ones (they're good for those of us who have jobs or parents that don't approve)
But your dreadlocks are beautiful, and show that you're the type of person that can stick to a commitment!
i would LOVE to have dreads, in fact sometimes if i don't brush my hair for two days i get baby ones underneath (i have THICK curly hair that knots easily) unfortunately i'm on a job hunt...and living in the midwest with closed minded people makes it hard enough!

Those look good! I remember a teacher that i worked with when i was teaching High school had had some and they rocked! I would but it's not that i couldn't commit, unfortunately i work for the gov't and they would probably tell me to get rid of them Happy! I'm still surprised they didn't tell me to take out my industrial rod! You so rock!!!

hmmm, you should add that buying yourself a crotchet hook and taking time out to thread the loose strands of hair back into your dreads each month is a good thing to do if you want them to look good. Over wain is bad, it makes them come lose. the crotchet hook comes in handy if you need to itch your scalp..... and back combing hurts, but its worth it
