  • How to make a crochet. How To Cut A Crocheted Steek - Step 1
    Step 1

Your 'steek' should look something like this once the knitting is finished. The 'steek stitch' is the column of stitches in the centre of the steek that will be cut. If you are washing/blocking your project then it is best to do this before you steek to help the stitches lock together. Chill out, this is going to be easier than you think.

    Step 2

Use a crochet hook about the same size as your knitting needles. Make a slip stitch on the hook then chain one (pull a loop through the slip stitch).

    Step 3

You will crochet up the left side of the steek first from bottom to top, then down the right side from top to bottom. With the loop already on the hook, insert the hook into the centre of the stitch to the left of the steek stitch and out the centre of the steek stitch. This will give you two 'legs' on the crochet hook - in this case they are one of each colour.

    Step 4

Pull a loop through the two legs (two loops on hook) and then pull another loop through the two loops on the crochet hook - one loop on hook and one crochet stitch completed.

    Step 5

Insert the hook into the centre of the stitch to the left of the steek stitch, one row up from before, and out the centre of the steek stitch. Repeat previous step. Continue in this manner until you reach the top of the steek.

    Step 6

One side has been completed and it should look like this.

    Step 7

Turn the work and start to repeat the process back down the steek, inserting the hook into the centre of the stitch to the right of the steek stitch and out the centre of the steek stitch. Both sides of the steek stitch should now be covered by a crochet stitch so all that is visible is a little bar between the two. If you find that the right leg of the steek stitch isn't visible this may be because you have incorporated it into the crochet stitch on the first side. You'll need to pull the crochet stitches out to fix that.

    Step 8

Once you have finished the crocheting you can join the crocheted ring together by doing a slip stitch into the first crochet stitch and then pull the end of the yarn through the last loop on the hook to fasten off.

    Step 9

With sharp, pointy scissors you can now cut the steek. The stitches are going NOWHERE because they've been tied down by the crochet stitches AND because the wool will stick to itself. Snip carefully up the 'ladder' of the middle of the steek stitch between the two rows of crochet stitches. Make sure you don't cut the crochet yarn. And that's it. The crochet stitches form a neat edge to the steek, all that's left to do is weave in the ends of the crochet yarn!
