Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such
any square of fabric becomes a chic handbag in seconds!

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of folding fabric - primarily to carry objects such as a bottle or bento box, or to wrap a gift. To learn how to wrap just about anything that will hold still go to furoshiki.com and see what Japan's Department of the Environment has to say on the matter!

Instructions

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 1
    Step 1

Start with a square of cloth. I almost always use this silk scarf that was given to me ages ago, but have also used leftover fabric squares, banadanas, and cloth napkins.

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 2
    Step 2

Fold a triangle. This is where having a very square cloth comes in handy! If there's a "right" side to your fabric, fold it wrong-side-out for now.

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 3
    Step 3

bring the tips of the long side up to the top of your triangle. This does not have to be exact by any means!

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 4
    Step 4

roll each of your tips into a rope down to where the last stage of folds began. This is hard to explain and I hope the picture helps! Basically you're just twirling until you get about halfway down.

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 5
    Step 5

tie a knot at the base of the tail you just twirled. again, I hope the picture helps. Do the same on the other side.

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 6
    Step 6

I can't take enough pictures to explain this step. Bring the two tails together and flip the whole thing inside out so that the tails tuck inside. Tie the two remaining corners into a square knot at their tips. Shaking it a little will help the bag take shape.

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 7
    Step 7

You're done! What can you carry in your stylish new bag? How about all of this?

  • How to make a furoshiki / wrap. Furoshiki Bag For Groceries And Such - Step 8
    Step 8

Yup! It all fits! Imagine how many groceries you could carry without ever using a plastic bag again!

Sorry it took so long, but at least it's not fall yet! The cloth I used in all of these was an old silk scarf that's a little over a foot square and I like that size for groceries but for taking my bento to work I always use cheapo bandanas. You could totally make your own, no problem! I just happen to have lots of ready-to-rumble squares around somehow.

I've always wanted to try this! I'm going to Japan in the fall, so I want to get in touch with all the crafts I can while I'm there.

What size cloth do you use? I want to see about making my own.
