cake shaped like an apple
Here is a cake I made for my friend's birthday. He said he wanted an apple because there was one on the cover of the twilight book.

It's 4 layers tall. chocolate with strawberry icing. (of course you can make it whatever flavors you want) It took me a couple hours to make including baking and cooling time.

Let me know if you have any questions about it.

  • Step 1

Got a couple people wanting a how-to so I've decided to convert, though i don't really have pictures of the process.

First you bake a cake. easy enough.

I use the cake mix boxes so just follow the directions on whichever kind of cake you want to use.

  • Step 2

Let the cakes cool and then you have to cut the tops off of all of the cakes except the top layer making the cakes flat on both sides so they stack easier.

Then you ice and stack your layers but do not ice the top or outside yet.

  • Step 3

Now you carve the cake to shape it like an apple. I used a large bread knife.

I simply made it smaller at the bottom and then cut the hole in the top where the stem goes, trying to make the cake as round and smooth as possible like a real apple.

  • Step 4

now you can finish icing the entire cake and set it aside. (make sure it's covered so it doesn't dry out)

Roll out your Fondant and Cover your cake. Make sure it doesn't rip or stretch too much. I will post a whole separate project for the fondant if you do not already have a recipe.

  • Step 5

Now comes the easy part which is making it look like an apple.

I tried coloring the fondant red which proved extremely difficult. No matter how much colouring i added, it stayed pink, so i took the easy way.

I got a small bowl and put the food coloring into it with some water to thin it out (i used gel food coloring) and got out a brush and literally painted the red food coloring onto it.

The brush provided that streaky look that apples actually have. then i went back and added some yellow in some parts to make it look more realistic. it was really easily to play around with until i got it right.

  • Step 6

The final touch was using some of the leftover fondant to add a stem and a leaf.

Once i put them on, i carefully painted them green with the paintbrush.

I actually wish i could have added more detail, but i was in such a hurry so this was the best i could do.

    Step 7

And that's it! it's done. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I have the fondant recipe and directions on a separate project for your convenience.

I would love to see some people make some versions of this project!!
