A lovely high waisted skirt.
I used a button down shirt (Gap XL) that I took from my dad to make a skirt.

  • How to recycle a shirt into a skirt. Skirt From Men's Button Down - Step 1
    Step 1

I stole my dad's shirt in hope to belt it and wear it like a shirtdress. This was a hopeless idea though, considering the size of the sleeves.

    Step 2

So first, I cut straight across the torso at the armpits...

...which gave me two pieces, one of them being this. It will later be the majority of the skirt.

Then, I cut off the rest of the fabric on the back, up to the yoke.

    And cut that in half.

After that, I sewed those two pieces into long tubes.

  • Step 7

Okay, now this step is harder to explain. So, I cut one of the tubes half of the circumference of my waist. I took the second one and cut it into two quarters of the circumference of my waist. Then, I cut part of the buttoning area and attached the button to one quarter and the button whole to the other one so that they can fasten together. Finally, I sewed the quarters and the half together to create a sort of belt, which becomes the waistband.

And lastly, I sewed together the waistband and skirt, adaquately pleating.

You can also make a cool apron from a man's shirt, using the collar as the waistband.
I saw it in a book called Sewing Green.

cool. My dad has a truly awful denim shirt, but it would look great if I did this - if only I could convince him to give it to me!
