A perfect poppy to sell or wear for Remberance day
Remembrance Day is a day in November when people gather together for memorial services to remember the day World War One ended and to remember the people who have died in wars.

In the UK war veterans and volunteers make and sell poppies to raise funds for The Royal British Legion. Mainly the poppies are paper and plastic affair, that are pinned to lapels of coats and jackets with a pin. But our knitting group like to knit and crochet poppies to sell and to donate to The Royal British Legion.

The pattern is worked using UK crochet terms...

Step 1
Please note that I am using UK crochet terms to make this poppy.

Make a slip knot and chain 3. Then work 10tr into the first ch. Sl st into third chain to join. (10sts)
Step 2
3ch, 3tr into each tr from previous round. Sl st in third ch to join. (30sts)
Step 3
3ch, 3tr into each tr from previous round. Sl st in third ch to join. (90sts)
Step 4
3ch, 1dc in nect st, *2ch, 1dc in next st, rep from * to end. Fasten off. But do not cut ends.
Step 5
This is a tip rather than a another step. I like to buy fancy button for my poppies from China via Ebay. You can bulk buy quite fancy buttons very cheaply this way. You do have to plan ahead, the shipping from China can take up to a month or more.

The buttons can be assorted sizes, but they do need to be black, but can also have a touch of sparkle.
Step 6
With the starting tail thread, sew on the button to the centre front of your poppy.
Step 7
Flip the poppy over and on the reverse with the tail left from finishing the crochet work; sew on a safety pin or broach pin. I like to sew mine just above the centre, so that when its worn it won't flop down when it's being worn.
