Step 1Firstly, wipe your shoe with a cloth until they are clean. Cover your work surface with scrap paper. Cover the strap, side panels and inside of the heels with masking tape.

Step 2Dip the paintbrush in the water-based acrylic gold size, and apply a coat to the entire heel and back panel.

Step 3Leave to dry for 15 minutes. Once the milky adhesive is completely clear and sticky, pick up a sheet of gold leaf with tweezers and gently place it over the heel and back panel. Gold leaf is extremely delicate and can easily crumble, so handle with care.

Step 4Pat and smooth it down gently on the sticky surface with a clean, soft brush. Continue to cover the area, filling in any gaps, if necessary. Smooth out creases and brush away any debris. Repeat steps 1–5 for the other shoe.

Step 5Seal the surfaces with a coat of clear Shellac sealer. Leave to dry for 15 minutes, then stand back and marvel at the golden-heeled beauties.
