  • How to make a piece of seasonal decor. Diy Fall Decor Using Scrap Wood - Step 1
    Step 1

Lay out your plywood piece on a work surface. Collect together all of your scrap wood pieces, whether they be decking, fence posts or otherwise, and try to fill in the surface of your plywood. You are creating a mosaic or puzzle look here - so mix, match, shuffle and rearrange until you have created an 'almost' solid surface.

Once you have your pieces arranged how you like, glue each one down onto the plywood using a strong wood glue. Glue the edges of pieces that will butt up against others to bond them into place as well. Clamp and/or weight your glued pieces down until dry - approximately an hour.

Use your marker to draw out your shape. In this case, I didn't have enough wood to create the 'chubby bottom' of a pumpkin, so I opted for an apple instead. Cut out your shape using a jig saw.
(If any pieces come loose, just re-adhere and weight back into place)
The finished size of this project is 21" by 19" - but you could go larger or smaller depending on your scrap pile and where you'd like it displayed.

    Step 4

Sand your surface and edges for a more cohesive look.

This step is optional: you can leave your wood looking rustic and warm, or you can stain and seal it for a richer look. I chose to apply a couple of different stains and then sand some of the excess off to get the best of both worlds.

    Step 5

If you are using pine scraps, you'll want to seal the wood from the elements. You can use a matte varnish and not lose any of the rustic look.

Once completely dry, set out on your porch or mantle and enjoy your gorgeous Fall decor!
