The best thing about living in Butte is we have art, history, beautiful architecture, and some of the best people around!

Shop

Crafty people should check out the Farmer's Market, Twisted Design (shameless plug, but it's true), Art Walk, the festivals, and really almost anywhere in Uptown Butte where the business owners are awesome! We have one major craft/fabric store and a few smaller mom and pop type craft supply stores. I do a lot of my shopping online, even before we moved here.

Be Inspired

Butte has amazing historical buildings, even my shop was once a bank 100 years ago. Want something more natural? Just look around. We are a small city nestled in the mountains surrounded by nature. We are a "Festival City" during the summer with a Folk Festival, An Ri Ra, and Evel Knievel Days (he was from here).

Take photos of the buildings Uptown.... I can't tell you how amazing they are. And you have to get at least one with a headframe. The World Museum of Mining is great too! To be honest when I see tourists they've got their cameras going the whole time they're walking.

You should also take a tour of the Copper King Mansion, the Dumas Brothel (yes I said brothel, and no it's a museum now) and check out Our Lady of the Rockies, a 90-foot statue, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, that sits atop the Continental Divide overlooking Butte. It is the second tallest statue in the United States after The Statue of Liberty.

Eat & Drink

This is Montana... Steak at The Derby or Casagrandas. And believe it or not, Casagrandas does amazing sushi on Thursday nights.

Craft

We have so many parks (my favorite is Heritage Park for the view) and art inspired coffee houses like The Venus Rising Espresso House. It's a coffee house owned and operated by the Butte Silver Bow Arts Foundation. And it's not uncommon to see an easel set up outside a bar here.

The Art Walk (1st Friday of the month), Farmer's Market (every Saturday on Park St.), Venus Rising, the Art Chateau, one of our many galleries are great places to make new friends and you can come by and see me, Kim, at Twisted Design (49 W Park). There aren't any craft clubs yet... but I'm working on it.

See Something Special

I was saving this one for last.... check out The Berkley Pit. The pit is one mile long and half a mile wide and over 1780 feet deep and the prettiest toxic water you'll ever see... from a platform high above.

Take Home A Souvenir

Don't leave here without something copper! It was the copper mines that put Butte on the map!

Note: Special shout out to these people giving me access to their photographs - Jennie Nielsen, Gretchen Miller, Julie Deshner, and Joyce Wilhelm.

I too have traveled the world and lived in Alaska for eight years. I suppose everyone has their own opinion of paradise. I hope your business is a success there. Best of luck to you and, most importantly, stay safe! Happy

Oh Maize I know you had a rough go of it here. But really after traveling all over the world for 20+ yrs. this is where we want to retire. We love it here and wouldn't live anywhere else.

I about fell over in my chair when CO&K's weekly newsletter came across my inbox with a link to this story. I'm a Montana girl (Helena) and moved my business to Butte in 2008. I can't say that I had the type of experience you've had there. I purchased the gas station at Wyoming/Granite (now Taco del Sol). Let's just say I ended up in litigation over that and won. The paint job on the outside is mine, and also the inside garage bay. I moved my studio to the current Venus Rising location. Yes, that paint job on the outside, exposed copper and painted black exterior (copper numbers above the door) and inside is mine, along with the decorative willow branches I left behind. After having my walk up flat on Granite street window shot out and the windows in my car shot out 3 times, I thought it best to move away. A friend was also beaten and face planted outside their Uptown studio and experienced terrible injuries. When my son was deployed to Afghanistan (he returned safely), I hung a picture of him inside The Lady and said a prayer. I fondly refer to her as Mother Love and wrote a post about her here: http://maizehutton.blogspot.com/2009/06/magnificent-mother-love.html. The local paper wrote a story about me and I also won the Montana Ecostar Award two years in row and was able to meet the Governor. I love the buildings in Uptown, but it has a long way to go. Montana will always remain near and dear to my heart. I wish you the best and pray for your safety. Next time I drive thru, I'll be sure to stop and say 'Howdy.' In kindness, Maize PS. I hiked to the 'M' more times than I can count!
