I had a quick look on pinterest and found these boards - http://pinterest.com/search/boards/?q=steampunk - it might be worth creating an account with them if you don't have one so you can pin everything pic/project idea you find in one place. I do that with swaps when I'm getting ideas. I also use polyvore for that as it seems to give me a starting point.

Steampunk is victorian dress with mechanical/science twist. Your like mechanics/scientists in an old era. So Lots of black, browns, & mixed metals (gold/brass mostly) & leather.
Men wear suits (at least dress pants, shirt & vest). You can also wear top hats, boots, trench coat, goggles, gloves, colored glasses, eyepatch, gasmask, pocket watch, cane/walking stick, utility belt, science fiction ray gun.
Women wear victorian dresses, or at least a corset. She can also have boots, fishnet stockings, mini hats/hairpiece, gloves, goggles, mini umbrella, mini utility belt or leather pouch pockets (hanging off dress). Also steampunk jewelry like cameo necklaces/brooch, earrings, etc. Both can also carry a leatherish bag/satchel or lil trunk, or women a birdcage as props.
.
All of clothes/accessories (like hats, goggles, corset, jewelry) can be decorated with (spray painted) brass/gold colored things like keys, clock parts, buttons, coins, wire, fake badges/war medals or natural feathers. You can spraypaint a plastic gun/big water gun gold & glue cardboard cogs to it or wrap in wire (even a clothes hanger), to decorate. You can also put rolled up old looking paper or maps in pockets or use as props (can buy in scrapbooking isle). I'd also recommend dirtying up the clothes with dust (from a sweeper) or dirt a lil ..so it looks like your explorers. Lol
If your on a small budget, try goodwill or resell shops for clothes & fabrics you can restyle. Google a lot of pictures for more ideas! Good luck!
