Come behind the scenes at In Color Order for a #CraftRoomTour and see Jeni's craft room in New Haven.

My favorite thing about my space is the natural light, no question. My previous space was very dark and had only one small north facing window, so I really appreciate natural light where I work. I have two big windows that get morning sun, so I rarely need to use a lamp or the overhead light.

Tell us about your space

My craft room is a little under 200 square feet, with access to our walk-up attic. It is a dedicated space for my sewing and quilting. I am lucky to have this room all to myself! I do most of my computer work (blogging, pattern writing, etc) downstairs in our office, so this space is just for creative work.

What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?

I love being organized and to be surrounded by color. So keeping my supplies organized and in pretty rainbow order makes me happy and inspires me to make things. To enhance the natural light that this room gets, we gave the room a fresh coat of bright white paint. I kept things light with mostly white furniture, which gives my fabrics a chance to shine. The big scrap rug pulls everything together.

How do you keep organized?

I think one of the most important things about organization is making sure that everything has a specific place to go. That makes it much easier to keep things organized. I find that a good balance of form and function helps motivate me to stay organized. It looks so nice when everything is neat and tidy, and that makes me want to keep it that way!

Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?

I like using lots of small bins for organizing my supplies. This way I can keep different supplies or crafts separated, making it easier to find what I need. It also means I don't have to pull out a huge bin to look for one thing. I also use a lot of clear bins, so I can easily see what I have and where it is. Same concept applies to my fabric. Being able to see it all at once really helps when pulling for a project and when putting fabrics away too.

Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?

I love being able to display my collections, especially my vintage sewing machines and pincushions. I don't keep many of my creations on display, but there are a few bags and other projects tucked in nooks around the room. Probably my favorite thing in the room is my two big sewing tables. My Dad bought them for me from an old schoolhouse that was going to be torn down. They're big and sturdy, and they happen to fit perfectly in my space!

How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?

I am a huge fan of Pinterest. I love having all of my inspiration organized into really specific boards. That way it's easy to find what I'm looking for when I sit down to work on a project. When I was a kid I was always saving pictures and articles from magazines, and to me Pinterest is the digital version of that.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Everywhere! I am on a constant inspiration scavenger hunt and I'm always taking photographs or interesting designs or patterns. You never know when you'll see something that will spark an idea. I love making practical things, so I get a lot of ideas by solving problems that I encounter in my home and work.

If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?

Honestly, these are going to be tiny wishes because I think I already have my dream craft space! I'd wish for an extra vent, so it's warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. I'd wish for a little more wall space for hanging artwork and mini quilts. And finally I'd wish for more storage space.
