My friend and I went to the arthall in Rotterdam and saw an exhibition called ICON DRESSED designed by Annette Meyer, each garment was made of paper and represented a decade of women clothing from the 1800's till now. I was amazed by a garment which looked exactly like the dress Keira Knightley wore in Pride & Prejudice, I went home got into a romantic state of mind, converted that into creativity and made this.

the shirt has to be my size? a little big? or it doesn't matter?
Kiko
15 Mar 21:48
camilaustral- i made one with a fitted shirt that was just a little bit loose and it turned out great.
EVEnl
15 Mar 21:50
It don't think it really matters as long as it's not too oversized... the shirt I used was a little bigger then my usual size... I reckon if you use a bigger t-shirt you'll have more pleats.

Awesome tutorial and it looks very elegant and stylish.

16 Mar 02:55
and would it work with a slightly small t-shirt??
(sorry for all the questions, but i have a LOT of tees that are just a little tight to wear and i don't want to throw away :P)

16 Mar 10:25
I guess if you use a smaller shirt it would turn out fine too.

i adore this! going to make one tonight. i just made one that is similar but more of a 70's halter...same concept but the t-shirt's sleeves are cut off and you cut a strip off of the bottom to use around the neck to cinch it up as a halter instead...very cool. thanks!

do you cut the neck line as deep as you want it or do you just cut off the ribbing???

This is great! I have tried it frowzily with an really old shirt (didn't want to waste a nice one).
Since I don't have a sewing machine I used fabric glue - but this works nice, too. Instead of a ribbon I just pulled through some yarn, made a loop on one side and added a button on the other side.
I will soon do another one, but then neatly. Can't wait to start :)

This was my first sewing project ever!(besides some random practice) and I just loooooooooooooooove it.I asked my mom for an old t-shirt. It turned out absolutely gorgeous and I'm really proud now lol especially since my mom always complains about how I never follow anything through to the end. In your face, ma! haha well it didn't hurt that the project was super fast. Thanks for getting me into sewing:)

OMG...PERFECT!! At my school, the outside shirt straps have to be at least 3 inches thick (stupid dress code!). Which means, I have a zillion cami-dresses that I can't wear. I'm gonna make a billion of these so that I can wear them over the dresses. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

What a great idea to transform a shirt that may not be work appropriate onto one that is by layering with this srug design, I had Bought some second hand shirts that I wanted to do a shrug with but was thinking about shortening it at the back but this would add more to it. Thanks for the idea!

Since i saw your post two days ago i have made 4 shrug tops, took a while since i do not have a sewing machine, but they still turned out good. I really like that i can wear my short sleeve tops with the shrugs over them, gave me a lot more wardrobe options. Thank you so much!!!
