You can practice the running stitch by making a lovely spring card. You will use a free printable and learn how to sew it onto a card by pre-punching holes and using the running stitch to attach the free printable to a card. Great way to master the stitch while at the same time creating a useful card or place setting.

Gather your supplies. You will need a sewing needle with a generous sized eye (8-10) or a tapestry needle, embroidery floss in your colors of choice, embroidery scissors, a sewing or safety pin to poke holes in the paper, paper scissors to cut out your free printable, a blank notecard on which to place your printable and lastly, your free printable. *Optional: double sided tape to secure the printable to the card while you are sewing and decorative scrapbook paper.

Print out your free bunny printable. I used a matte photo presentation paper on which to print but card stock also works well. You want a thicker paper than regular paper because it holds the stitches well.

Cut out a rectangle around the bunny and then use your pin to poke holes around the perimeter. Leave at least a 1/4 inch at the edge to allow for enough room for the stitching. I made the holes about 1/4 inch apart from each other.

Thread your needle with the floss. I used all six strands. Knot the bottom of the floss using a double knot. Pull the needle up through the back of the card into the pre-poked hole, pulling the needle all the way through until the knot catches on the other side.

    Step 6

Make the running stitch by bringing the needle down one hole to the back and back up again through the front until you have gone all the way around the card, ending at the back. To finish, make a knot by sliding the needle in through a stitch you already made and making a knot. I like to make two knots to secure the stitch.
