  • How to sew a baby top. One Strap Wonder Tank - Step 1
    Step 1

First you have your fabulous shirt, new, used, it doesn't matter as long as you like what its going to be when you are done.

Then figure out how it will fit. You can take an old shirt that fits how you want, and place it down on top of the "new creation" shirt, and cut away. OR you can be like me and just cut. Since this was for Peach, I just cut, because I knew it would have an elastic top to it.

I cut the sleeves off and sides and top.

Then I turned the right sides together and pinned get ready sewing machine here I come!

Once it is sewn together, I make the casing for the elastic at the top of the shirt. Now, normally, I do a really nice job, but since this is just a summer shirt from a thrift store find, I didn't bother. haha yeah some people might call me lazy. haha

Then thread the elastic through. I always use the safety pin to help guide it through and pin the end of it to the shirt, so it doesn't get lost in there.

To make the strap, grab your scraps and measure on the wearer of the clothing to see how long you need to make the elastic, and just add how ever many inches you wish for that extra ruffled edge. Peach said she didn't want a huge fluff ball on her strap for this shirt, just a soft one. hehe so we didn't add much extra. Find a good placement on the shirt and sew it on to both front and back on the inside (wrong side). Then there ya go!
