Pin Up Girls

I think reclaiming sex for women is a very important thing- but I don't think being a pin up girl is the right way of going about it.

I watched a program the other night about female sex bloggers- that was interesting, I liked that. There was nothing overly dirty about it, just women being brutally honest about their sex lives. Women like sex, get over it, was basically the attitude- and that's a good one to have. There were no pictures, no filthily descriptive and erotic literature, just saying the good and bad points to being single and having a healthy sex life. Sadly, thanks to the sexism that has developed around women supposed to be keeping schtum about that sort of thing, unless it's to please men- the press did all they could to discover the identity of these women and the anonmity that's necessary to allow women to discuss their sex lifes openly on the internet was stolen from them. Reading their blogs helped a lot of women realise they weren't alone or disgusting in loving sex.

It's not the right way for everyone, no, but it is for some people. Well, obviously not just by being a pin-up girl, that doesn't automatically make you a strong, sexual person

I don't think it helps women at large. I'm sure the women themselves love it, but personally I believe (and I know other people have different opinions!) that it makes life harder for a lot of other women.

How do you think that pin up girls make womens life harder? Forgive me if you already wrote, it hard to remember exactly eveything in such a long rant with so many verying oppions. There's no way I can read it all again.

"As a result a lot of women are being treated as objects- even if these women enter into a sexual art completely willingly, it has effects on the rest of the population. A good example of this is men honking their car horns at women, simply because they see them walking down the street in a short skirt. Also there's sexual harassment like pinching bottoms, or at worse- rape. Now, I know it's not entirely the fault of the Pin Up Girls, so I guess I'm talking about the sexual industry as a whole here- but it glamourising it in the way pin up girls do, certainly doesn't help. "

The reason why pin up girls make that happen is because they present themselves purely as objects of sexual desire. Yeah, if you research their back story sometimes they have good things in the past, but in the pictoral, sexual form- you don't see any of that. You don't see that I don't know, they're the girl with the law degree, or they're the girl that I don't know, saved orphans from a burning building, you simply see that they look sexy. It's then super easy for others, like men, to view all women as that. That's why it's fine that Corrie or whoever wants to be sexy for their man- because their man knows more about them. They know that they're good mothers, that they're good crafters, that there's more to them than sex- but the way pin up girls present themsevles hide all of that, and offers only the sexual aspect. That's why it's bad for other women.

My 2 cents: pin-up girls are just chubby porn-stars! lol

roma i didnt mean to give you a hard time i just dont think pinups contribute to even half of the sex problems in media or what ever you will call it
yes pin ups make looking sexy desirable but whats wrong with looking sexy ;)
i havent come across any 15 yr old pin up girls so thats good
and i remember what its like to feel pressured into losing your virginity but i think its more on the guys part pressureing the girl and im pretty sure hormons have something to do with it and hes probley looking at porno videos not a pinup girl picture
pinup is kinda a form of soft porn i agree
the only reason i called you sexist is because you seem to be really aginst men being sexual towards woman like a woman wouldnt take the intitative towards a man women dont honk comeon now you know they do if a guy is working with out a shirt or wearing something that shows off his muscles
girls are just as guilty as guys
why is it that when a woman likes sex she gets accused of being a slut but when a man likes it hes normal we are all human we all have sexual urges for crying out loud
i dont think its fare that you point out pinups to be the main cause of sexual pressure on young girls i think their are alot of other important contributing factors as well
and if i was to give your friend any advice i would say just hold your ground ppl guys especially are gonna say things to hurt you because they want you to give in and lose your virginity girls might say things but its because deep down inside its because they envy the fact that you havnt given in to the pressures around you unlike their selves
their will allways be some form of pressure wheather its drugs or sex or what ever its how you handle the setuation that defines you as a person and your place in life

corrie, I can see you're trying to make some very valid points but it is really hard to follow what your saying due to your lack of punctuation so a lot of what you are saying in lost in a jumble of words Happy

Someone needed to say it, Shivi- thankyou.

Thanks for the advice for my friend Corrie, but I can assure you, she won't be taking any advice from you.

I know pin up girls don't contribute as badly as porn stars do- I never said that, I was upset about the adoration of pin up girls in the crafting world, where they don't need to be.

Guys act in that way because some girls allow it.

If you bothered to read what I said, you'd know that I'm not against women being sexual people. It's when they're just sex that it becomes a problem- and the same goes for men.

I can also say that I have never seen a woman honk at a guy working without a shirt. Even if I had- women's attitude toward men in general is a lot better than men's to women. It evens out.

Well, sorry to say, as long as their are living breathing women around men (even if we all wore the ugliest clothes that showed no skin, wore no makeup, and cut off all of our hair) we would be honked at, googled at, and whistled at. Like or not, as women we are sexual objects, that's the way the world, is.

I've got to say Roma, I think your point about pin-up girls ruining stuff for women because of their appearance is a little unfair. That's like saying if a girl wears a short skirt, all she is is a girl who's showing off her legs. Except pin-up girls are this kind of demi-celebrity and actually have the chance to defend themselves (such as in Snippets!). The argument that you judge people by appearance is a little unfair, because although it's true you can apply it to almost anyone in any walk of life. If you saw someone in really boring clothes you might think they were dull. I'm talking round in circles but I hope some of that got through!

I didn't say all pin up girls thought about was sex? Did I?

I don't mind people disagreeing with me, that's what debate is all about.

Women shouldn't be sexual objects- it's not right. It shouldn't just be the way the world is.

I would like to repeat I'm not blaming everything on pin up girls! It's just part of the probelm (a small part, granted) but the original point was about them being part of the crafting world- and how I felt they shouldn't be.

I don't think that about short skirts at all- short skirts are fine. They're just legs. It's when bodies are presented in certain ways that I have problems with. I understand that judging by appearances is unfair- but the pin up girl (and other people working in the industry) do put themselves forth as a sexual appearance, and don't give background information. I'm not saying that's all there is to them, as people seem to think I have said, I'm just saying that's what people might perceive it as, and people with small minds often do.

Nah I know what you mean, I'm just saying that if a girl walks out in say a short skirt, heels and a bikini top, she's perceived a sexual object, but that's not fair because she's just dressing how she wants. Maybe it IS to get attention, but isn't that her choice as a free woman? And people would assume she was a slut or whatever without noticing. There are always first impressions.

But I kind of agree with you about pin-up girls and craft. Fair enough if every now and then someone does a tutorial on DIY pasties (those Batman ones are AWESOME!). The only thing is, when someone says pin-up girls I think burlesque, which I believe is an art form so I have to keep reminding myself that they're not the same thing =P

I do notice that we have alot of strong minded and beautiful women here. We all have our views on this particular subject and either way I see it we can just all agree to disagree. No one is forcing their views to change your mind but only make you ponder more in depth on what is said.

So smile and pick up that sewing needle and use that energy to make something brand new...and please can someone lend me some glue. Happy
