Haha, I used to make these 
by the way, have you tried sewing the sides shut whilst the shirt's inside out, turning it the right way round, and then stuffing it through the neck hole bit, and sewing that up from the outside, where there's already stitches on the shirt - this just hides most of the stitching and gives them a more professional look, and well done for your first time on a sewing machine!
