Nice & Simple
Description

I made this dress with just a meter of this really cute fabric I found on the market, I was just walking by, and I'm a sucker for polka dots so I couldn't resist :) I did my steps in an awkward order, so I'll rearrange it to make it easy for you guys... I wanna see versions!

Instructions
  1. 1

First of all, measure out your fabric. You'll need to add about 5cm to the length you need for hems.

  2. 2
    Step 2

Next, hem the bottom of the fabric.
    Then the top.

  3. 3
    Step 3

I would say here's the difficult bit, but its amazingly simple.
Take your shirring elastic and wind it around an empty bobbin.
DON'T USE A MACHINE TO DO THIS, ITS IMPORTANT YOU DON'T STRECH THE ELASTIC WHILE WINDING IT.
Put your bobbin in the machine as usual and sew rows of stitching with the same size gaps between.

  4. 4

With the right sides together, sew down the side of the dress.

  5. 5
    Step 5

    (optional)
    add straps.
    DONE! :)

By the way, did you use a gatherer foot on the sewing machine? Thanks. =)

Really cute!

And thank you for this! I've been wanting to try my hand at making a few shirred things but have always thought it was complicated - I honestly didn't know it would be this simple and your instructions are really easy to follow too! =D

course it would work for double layer, just be careful to keep them perfectly lined up while doing it :) I'd love to see your version :D

i love the fact that you said NOT TO STRETCH THE FABRIC... i have no idea how many patterns for shirring i've read and found and NONE of them mention this... i'm soooo happy i did before i started in on this pattern!!! i wonder if you could do this with double layer fabric? i have this sheet that would be awesome as one of these dresses, but it's thin...

Nope, you just use it for the bobbin :) just make sure you don't stretch it when you wrap it around (so its best to do it by hand) and it should work just fine! :D

for shirring, do you use elastic as the top thread too? Sorry for a stupid question, but I'm kinda stupid like that :)
