A way to create stencil lettering on t-shirts without an actual stencil
 <  Image 1 of 2  >

This is my second Twilight inspired shirt. I wanted it plain and simple, but semi-more professional looking than the other shirts i create. I wanted it to look like actual stencil letters, but I didn't want to pay for some. So I created my own stencil-looking letters using wax paper, a pencil, tape, and white fabric paint. I'm doing a simple how-to, so if you're cheap like me, this is super easy and looks awesome! Hope you enjoy!

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

First off, you need a shirt. that's a given. I didn't want to actually dedicate a step to getting a t-shirt. But, after getting a shirt, you need to create your 'stencil'. I got some wax paper from my kitchen cabinet and just a little sheet of it. I looked up pictures of stencil letters on the internet and used them as my viewing eye guide. I, personally prefer to look at something and draw from just viewing it, so do whatever is easier for you. Just trace your letters in order with a pencil. I recommend using a mechanical pencil so it stays sharp, because after I drew the letters, I used the mechanical pencil to cut the spaces between the lettes.(like shown). if you accidently cut a piece you didn't want, simply use some tape and cover the spaces. As long as the space is covered, paint wont go through it and mess up your stenciling while painting.

  2. Step 2

    Step 2

After you have your 'stencil', place it over your shirt wherever you desire to put the art on. Then tape it down, like on the corners. Make sure that it is flat against the shirt, so while you're painting it doesn't decide to move around on you. Won't look too good...

  3. Step 3

    Step 3

Next is the painting part! Using whatever color you want and foam brush, gently dab through the stencil, covering all the spaces. You might have to do that a few times, so the color stays and is bold. P.S.- I recommend placing a cardboard piece or magazine inside the shirt while painting, cause it bleeds through some shirts. mine did alittle, but luckily it didn't show up on the back. :] i'm silly. But yeah, just paint it, then let it sit for just a little bit.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4

Next, you can remove your 'stencil'. Then, you can proceed to fix the loose ends that the stencil didn't get. you can also add more color to it, if it's still not as bold as you wish.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5

Then, you just let it dry and you're done! you can add stuff as well. I added gold stars to my shirt. But yeah, it is that simple to have the stencil lettering look, but not have to actually pay for stencil lettering that may not even be the design you want. This is just an easy way to do it. :]
