I tried blogger for the first incarnation of my blog. I now use Wordpress...they are both free and really easy to use even if you are a bit rubbish with computers like me.I think I prefer Wordpress but would recommend having a go at both and getting a feel before committing.

I would also suggest tumblr. It's a lot easier to get followers than blogger and seems to be the latest trend in blogging.

I find an effective way of gaining followers is to comment on other peoples blogs.
