RAF Menwith Hill in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK

Hi, I don't know that much about the base although my brother was an RAF officer at Cranwell which is in Lincolnshire nearby. But I'm from East Yorkshire, like 2 hours away from North Yorkshire. Yorkshire as a whole is great, universities, there is Hull in East Yorkshire, York which is ranked really high, and York St Johns which is a polytechnic. I would say Yorkshire is quite friendly and North Yorkshire you have the North York Moors and stuff which are beautiful and there are some really nice little villages around there, the only thing you may struggle with is the Yorkshire accent! What else did you want to know? Happy xxx

You might also want to know that it gets quite chilly in the north of England during the winter months :0)

On the plus side, my family are from North Yorkshire and it really is a beautiful part of the world.
I wouldn't worry too much about 'american friendly' as there are American Airbases dotted around the UK and the locals in the 'garrison towns' are used to Military personnel from out of town.

OOOOhhhh, would be exciting to have you over here pammerz, look forward to seeing the outcome of this.

Haha Kimmi! Thats one of the first thing I looked up was the weather! If it didnt snow there, I wasn't going, period. I am so tired of not having any changes in the seasons, out here in Hawaii it always looks same, just rains slightly more in the "winter"

Thanks for the info on the universities Vicki! I was holding out on going to school until I moved back home to Idaho next year, but If I'm going to be gone living in the UK for 3-4 more years, I thought I might want to get my act together and start taking some classes ^_^

I really hope this happens, my husband and I have always wanted to live in the UK but we never really thought it would happen, so we were just hoping for a visit, lol. So this would be so amazing!

Oh I was also wondering if everything really is connected by trains? I don't know why but that's what I've always though about the UK, that you can get to most anywhere by jumping on trains. Like if we did move to Harrogate and wanted to go to London for the day or something.

Also how hard is it to get to other countries? Like Scotland, Ireland, France, Netherlands, etc?

Hi Pammerz
Well as for snow, last year we had a freak year and got 6 weeks of thick snow which didn't go away! I was supposed to go on a geography trip to North Yorkshire but it got cancelled because there was so much snow, so I'm guessing you'd like that Happy
As for trains, I live in Hull and there is a direct train route to London that runs about 3 times a day which stops at Brough, York, Doncaster etc, like you might not always be able to get a direct train but you can pretty much get a train anywhere you like Happy Scotland you can get a train straight from Hull as well so you'd be able to get on at one of the later stops, Hull is on the coast so that's where a lot of yorkshire trains start from Happy And then to get to France tehre is the main P & O ferry dock in Hull as well which I'm pretty sure would go to Netherlands as well, or there's a few airports in Yorkshire, probably closest would be either Leeds Bradford in West Yorkshire or Humberside in East Yorkshire, if you've heard of the Humber Bridge? Happy
Welcome to the wonder of Yorkshire, I cannot believe you get bored of Haiwaiin weather, I need more heat ;) xxx

I am trying to hard to not get overly excited about this, because the Army has a way of changing your plans about a dozen times before anything is official, but its still awesome to day dream about, lol ^_^

I'd much rather be in Hawaii than uk!! Talk about the grass is always greener....
As other have said, it's pretty easy to get around UK by train. I can't drive so know all about the trains!!
Weather-wise we do get seasons, lots of rain, sometimes snow, sometimes a nice hot summer (not hot compared to Hawaii though!)
One good thing about UK is you can get cheap flights to europe with low-cost airlines, so you'd be able to visit europe easily if you wanted to!!

When will you know if it's going to happen??
