When you don't feel 100% there...

You Will Need

    Step 1

First you will need the key ingredient: a zip. You can get this at any textiles shop

    Step 2

I would suggest placing the zip where you would like to stick it on your face and lightly trace out the lines with an eye pencil – I used a grey (STORM BY RIMMEL)

Now your face is basically split into two parts: the choice is up to you… You could pick one pretty side and one ugly monstrous side, two different types of monstrous sides… I decided to do one part delicate and pretty, and the other part a bloody skull. So I just add the standard Marilyn Monroe esque pin up make up style for my eyes and eyebrow area.

    Step 4

For the skeleton part of the face – I took a black face paint (BLACK BY SNAZZAROO) and used that to paint my nose to make it look hollow

    Step 5

Take the black and paint the underneath of your chin

    Step 6

Take a white face paint (I’m using BLANC DE CLOWN BY SNAZZAROO) and put a coat over that whole area, not forgetting the lips too

    Step 7

Using my STORM pencil by RIMMEL I roughly sketched out my teeth… Remember without gums your teeth come up much higher than they seem

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 8
    Step 8

Using the black face paint with fine or small angled brush – go over the teeth you have drawn… (TIP: DON’T WORRY IF YOU MAKE THE TEETH IMPERFECT, IT JUST ADDS TO THE UGLINESS OF IT ALL :) )

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 9
    Step 9

Take a soft brush with a grey eyeshadow of your choice and blend round the edges

    Step 10

A LITTLE EXTRA TIP: To make the skull look more 3D place a bit of liquid latex glue on your chin and a little bit under your nose – try to avoid your nostrils!

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 11
    Step 11

Stick some tissue on your chin and under your nose – keep building with the latex if you wish

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 12
    Step 12

Add a touch of the black face paint to the corners to create depth – use a soft brush to help with the blending

    Step 13

I then used a mixture of a yellow and a green cream colour base to draw out the ‘brilliantness’ of the white (They were from a costume shop – can’t remember what they were called!)

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 14
    Step 14

Use a bit of latex glue along the edges and create that same paper mache effect with some tissue paper – this is going to be the cut wound :)

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 15
    Step 15

Add a touch of theatrical fake blood to the tissue paper

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 16
    Step 16

Add some more just underneath your ‘teeth’

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 17
    Step 17

Now it’s time to stick on your zipper – using the latex glue

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 18
    Step 18

Use some foundation and cover the seam – to make the zipper seem like it is ‘part of you’

  • How to create special fx make up. Zipper Face Inspired Make Up Tutorial - Step 19
    Step 19

Add a few stitches with a black liner – I think this creates the illusion that the zipper has been sewn into you too

    Step 20

Continue with the white and black down the neck for an extra effect.. Et fini!
