These socks combine richly coloured stripes with lace!

These socks combine richly coloured stripes with lace and are knitted in a luxuriously soft wool/cashmere blend yarn on double-pointed needles. The rib, heel and toes are plain, making it easier to shape these sections and providing a contrast to the stripes.

  • Step 1

    Knitting the socks (make 2)

Using 3.25mm needles and yarn B, cast on 60 sts and divide evenly onto three dpns. Place a marker at the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round.

    Step 2

Cast 60 sts onto a double-pointed needle, then transfer the first 20 sts onto a second dpn. Without twisting the needles, transfer the next 20 sts onto a third dpn.

    Step 3

Arrange the needles in a triangle, with the stitches evenly divided. Place a marker made from scrap yarn at the first stitch to indicate the beginning of the round.

  • Step 4

Break off yarn B and join yarn A. Work in k1, p1 rib for 2cm (3/4 in). Break off yarn A and continue on 3.75mm needles.

Rounds 1-2: Using yarn B, knit to the end. Without breaking off yarn B, join yarn C.
Round 3: Using yarn C, (k2tog, yo) to end.
    Round 4: Knit to end.
Without breaking off yarn C, join yarn D.
Round 5-6: Using yarn D, knit to end.
Rounds 7-30: Repeat rounds 1-6 four times.

    Step 6

Bring the yarn to the front of the work and then wrap it over the right needle (yo). Continue alternating k2tog and yo all around the sock,

  • Step 7

    Round 31: Using yarn B, k1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (58 sts).

    Round 37- 48: Repeat rounds 31-36 twice (54 sts).
Rounds 49-52: Repeat rounds 31-34 once (52 sts).

  • Step 8

    Heel Flap

Break off yarns B and C.
Using yarn D, k9, then slide these sts along to other end of this dpn and transfer them onto the previous dpn. This needle should now hold 25 sts, comprising 9 sts in yarn D and 16 sts in yarn C.

With a spare dpn, take 7 sts in yarn C from the end of this needle, leaving 18 sts for the heel, with marker at the centre. Rearrange the remaining 34 sts evenly onto two dpns. These will form the instep and will be worked later.
