  • Step 1

Assemble the chair following the assembly instructions. To work out where to place your assembled chair on the rocking chair runners, place the runners under the chair and leave about 8 1⁄2 inches (22 cm) on each end to center your chair.

HACK HINT: Any outdoor chair with arm rests would be suitable for this project, such as the ÄPPALARÖ, FALSTER, and ÄNGSÖ armchairs from IKEA® home furnishings.

Place a ruler or level against the legs of the chair to trace where you need to cut the wood at the right angle. Trace the incision to go about 3⁄4–1 inch (2–2.5 cm) deep into the wood.

    Step 3

With a mini saw or Japanese saw, cut
the part of the wood you just traced. This will be where the legs of the chair will
be positioned.

    Step 6

Using the pocket hole jig kit, drill two pocket holes in the back of each leg of the chair. For the SUNDERÖ chair, you should set up the drill bit and jig for 3⁄4 wood stock and set the jig on the fourth stop.

Apply wood glue along the rocking runner dents and place the chair legs into the dents.

    Step 8

Clean off any excess glue and drill in the pocket hole screws. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.

    Step 9

Sand the chair and runner, apply a coat of primer and then paint in the colors of your choice. You will need at least two or three coats for best results.

HACK HINT: If you are looking for a shortcut for this project, simply paint the runners
in a fun, contrasting color and leave the chair itself unpainted.
