  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 1
    Step 1

    Cutting!

Body of bag: Cut out 2 large rectangles from the main fabric and 2 large rectangles of the lining fabric.
    13 x 17 inches.
Fuse interfacing to all of these pieces.
Stack up all of the rectangles.

    Fold them in half widthwise

    Step 4

You will have four pieces that look like this.

  • Step 5

Bottom and sides: Measure around the sides and bottom… in this case that measurement is 39 inches. Cut out one rectangle of each the main fabric and the lining.
    3 x 39 inches
Fuse interfacing to these two pieces.

Zipper: Measure around the dip in the top of the bag. In this case, it measures 18 inches. Cut out one rectangle of each main fabric and lining.
    3 x 18 inches
Fuse interfacing to each of these pieces
Fold these two over and cut them in half longways.
    Two 3 x 18 inches = four 1.5 x 18 inches

    Sewing!

Find your pocket piece. Fold it in half right sides together and stitch around the edges. Don’t forget to leave an opening to turn it inside out.

    Step 8

Turn in right side out and pop out the corners with a chopstick or a pencil. Press it flat.
Grab one of the lining pieces, center the pocket, pin it down and sew it on.

    Step 9

Pin the side/bottom piece to one of the body pieces.

    Step 10

    Sew all the way around.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 11
    Step 11

Pin the other side of the body on and sew all the way around.

Do the same with the lining except you leave an opening for turning in the end.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 12
    Step 12

Ohhhh. Scary zipper part. (Don’t be scared.)

Grab the four skinny pieces we cut out earlier for the zipper. Attach your zipper foot and sew the zipper face down onto one of the main fabric pieces.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 13
    Step 13

(Note: I’m nuts and don’t pin anything. You can pin it if you want.)
Sew the other main fabric piece to the other side of the zipper. Make sure the right side of the fabric is together with the right side of the zipper.

If you open it up, it looks like this.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 14
    Step 14

Line up the edge of the lining piece with the edge of the zipper. (The right side of the fabric will face the wrong side of the zipper.)

LEAVE ABOUT AN INCH not sewn on each end. (I always for get this and have to rip it back a little. Grrr.)

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 15
    Step 15

Repeat the previous step with the final piece of lining.
Open it up and press everything flat… It should look like this.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 16
    Step 16

Make little loops for the dee rings. Fold them in half with right sides together. Stitch around the edges. Flip them right side out. Slip them into the dee ring and stitch the ends together.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 17
    Step 17

Attach the dee ring tabs by pinning them to the end of the main fabric and zipper. Fold the lining back and sew down.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 18
    Step 18

Now we get to pin the zipper section to the body section. Unzip the zipper a little. Stitch it on. (I found it easier to do the front and back first and the ends last.) I tend to flip it right side out at this point and make sure you like how it looks. This is your last chance to tweak how the straps are lining up. Flip it inside out.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 19
    Step 19

Pin the lining section to the lining part of the zipper. Sew it all the way around.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 20
    Step 20

Turn it right side out and stitch up the hole in lining.
We’re getting close, but we still need a strap.
The strap gets a little tedious. First press down the ends. (you will thank me later)

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 21
    Step 21

Bring the edges of the piece toward the middle and press it down.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 22
    Step 22

Fold the whole business in half and press it down.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 23
    Step 23

Topstitch the edges of strap. Leave the ends open. They make cute little pockets.

  • How to make a sling bag. Paisley Dee Ring Bag - Step 24
    Step 24

Make more little loops to attach the strap. Fold them in half with right sides together. Stitch around the edges. Flip them right side out. Loop them around the dee rings and feed the ends into the cute little pockets on the ends of the straps. Stitch them down.

Woo Hoo !!! We did it!!

Thanks very much for a great pattern. The instructions were easy to follow and the bag did not take long to complete. I'll post a pic of my version of the bag soon!
