suitable for any seafaring voyage or picturesque carriage ride through the country.
yet another mini hat made of foam. I usually wear this with pirate and kadona lolita styles. the luxurious silk fabric has a nice shine without being too costumey, and the pleated tulle is a good alternative to lace. do remember, if you plan on using lace and wear it with lolita, please research appropriate lace types before hand. thanks for looking, please feel free to post questions and versions ^^

  • How to make a hat. Mini Tricorner Hat - Step 1
    Step 1

first you're going to need to draft your pattern. the brim is a circle with a radius of 9cm minus the width of any trimming you're putting on it. as an example, the trimming I used was 3.5cm wide, so the radius of the circle I drew was 6.5cm. use your compasses to draw this on your paper. then you need to draw a circle slap bang in the middle of this with a radius of 3cm. carefully cut this out, so you end up with a donut shape. then draw another circle with a radius of 4cm and cut this out too. finally draw a strip 26cm by 4.5 cm. cut these out and trace them onto your foam sheets (I used two) this is the base of your hat.

    Step 2

take your paper pattern and cut out 2x brim pieces, 1x crown piece, 1x crown lining and 1x top. add seam allowances to all the pieces before cutting out. so now you should have 3 donut shaped brim pieces (1 foam, 1 fabric, 1 lining); 3 rectangular crown pieces (1 foam, 2 fabric); and 2 top pieces (1 foam, 1 fabric). you can see here I used a silk fabric for my main fabric, and a scrap of plaid for lining.

    Step 3

take your foam crown piece and glue the short ens so you have a tube. now glue the top piece on top of it so you have a sort of pillbox shape.

    Step 4

take your top fabric piece and glue it onto the top foam piece. take the seam allowance and glue it down over the crown.

    Step 5

now take your crown fabric and fold the seam allowance on the long edges down, gluing or sewing in place. wrap it around the crown of your pillbox, gluing the long edges to secure. when you get to the short edges, fold the seam allowance back on itself so you have a neat edge.

    Step 6

glue a circle of wire close to the edge of your brim. this will be the underside.glue your brim fabric around the hole in the middle. them fold the seam allowance on the upper one over onto the underside. then take the other seam allowance and fold it over onto itself to cover both raw edges.

if it isn't already, pleat or gather any trim you want to put on the edge of the brim.glue this so that it covers both the seam on the edge and the wire.

    Step 8

glue the crown on to the brim. cut tabs round the inner circle of the brim and glue these down to the crown so it's attached securely.

    Step 9

fold the edges of the lining piece and glue it around the inside to cover the joins between the top and crown, and the brim and crown.

    Step 10

add any extra trim to the hat. it's usually good to put a ribbon round the crown to cover the visible join between it and the brim. I've also added a rose, a feather, some fake pearls and a couple of bows. then fold up the brim so it gets the tricorner shape. you may want to glue the brim where it touches the crown so it stays in place.

    Step 11

finally glue on the Alice band. you might be able to use a ribbon and/or a comb, but I haven't tried this.
