How To: Laney's Emergency Summer Hat
I've received lots of positive response to Laney's emergency hat in the past few weeks. Unfortunately I didn't blog about this hat (at least that I remember or can find a link to), but it was on the Tawny Bee Fanpage. In case you forgot, the sun started to shine a little early this year and I was stuck without a suitable hat for my little girl. In a pinch, mommy came to the rescue and I create a very cute summer hat for Laney.
I'm glad you all like it. So I'm going to do something awesome! I'm going to make my first ever How To with a pattern attached! Excited!!!!!

This pattern will fit a baby 6 months to a year.
I'm using a new application called DropBox (online backup, file sync and sharing made easy) for the pattern. I can easily drop my scanned patterns into my public folder and voila! it makes a linkie for you! Awesomeness....
I made two hats at once to show you all the pretty ones that I've been working on. The pink and black fabric is from the Sew Mama Sew Fat Quarter Swap. April sent me this piece of pretty!

You Will Need

Step 1Click on the pattern links above, download the pdf and print it out. It should show up at 100%, but if it doesn't, please print it at 100%.
You should cut out:
1 top piece of main fabric
1 top piece of lining
1 back piece of main fabric
1 back piece of lining
You will also need 17 inches of pre-gathered lace and 35 inches of ribbon*** Note: All seams are 1/4"***

Step 2Pin lace in place along brim edge of 1 top piece. Baste.

Step 3Layer top pieces right sides together with pre-gathered lace sandwiched in between as shown in picture above. Pin. Stitch.
Sew a long basting stitch across both long unfinished ends for a bit of gathering.

Step 4Pin hat back to hat front right sides together by marking the middle on each piece and pinning them together. Work you way down both sides, gathering top piece by pulling on the basting stitches to fit. Repeat for lining as well. It won't look like much yet, but I assure you, it will work! Stitch.

Step 5Match up backs and sides with right sides still together. Stitch along two sections of the bottom leaving the third open in order to turn right side out.

Step 6Turn right side out. Press. It should resemble a hat now. Pin bottom section closed and topstitch along entire bottom, closing the hole as you go.

Step 7Select a length of ribbon that will fit around the brim of the hat and have enough on both sides to tie (mine was 35 inches). Pin, centering it on brim with equal sides. Sew in place.

Step 8Finish the ends of the ribbon with a little fray check or singe them with a lighter to keep them from unravelling. Attach a closure if desired.
I remind you that I'm only an amateur pattern maker, so there may be problems. You're welcome to give me some feedback and suggestions in the comments below.
