A unique, intermediate level half up arrow braided hairstyle
This is a pretty simple braided style. If you have mastered a basic three strand and the french braid, this is a great next step for you. It combines three strand braids, feathering braids and French braids.

  • How to style a braid / plait. Half Up Arrow Braid - Step 1
    Step 1

Start on the top center of the head with a section of hair. Divide into three equal parts and do the first few steps of a three strand braid.

    Step 2

For the next three (or six if you count each side) steps of the braid, you are going to leave out a small piece of hair from the outside of the section before you cross it over. This is called "feathering" the braid. This is a really great technique to learn if you're wanting to get in to creative braiding.

    Step 3

After you have left six sections out (or however many you decide on), finish off the braid by continuing to do a three strand braid to the ends without leaving feather pieces out. Tip: Keep in mind that the more sections you leave out, the smaller your braid is going to get because you are taking out hair. That's why I chose three on each side.

    Step 4

Take a section from one side of the head in the front and braid for about 3 inches, or until you get to about parallel with the first feather piece you left out in the step before.

    Step 5

When you cross over the next inside piece you are going to add in the top feather piece.

    Step 6

When you cross over the outside piece, do not add in any hair. Just braid as you would a three strand. So on the inside piece, you will be doing French braiding and on the outside piece, a regular three strand. Do this three times, or until you run out of feather pieces.

    Step 7

Continue a three strand braid to the ends and finish off with an elastic.

    Step 8

Repeat steps 4-7 on the other side.

    Step 9

You can leave it how it is, or you can finish off by tying all three braids together with an elastic!
