A nice introduction to both fair isle and hat making

A nice introduction to both fair isle and hat making, this one is knit flat with simple fair isle motifs every so often. earflaps and pompom optional.

SIZE - adult M, finished size 19" (stretches to fit)
YARN - scraps of aran/worsted weight will do, 4 colours. mine was cygnet wool rich aran (MC dark grey and CC1 darker pink), debbie bliss merino aran (CC2 grey) and cascade 220 (CC3 pale pink). because of this i'm not sure on yardage.
NEEDLES - 1 pair 5mm straight, two 4mm double pointed needles (or 1 circular)
GAUGE - 5 sts and 6 rows = 1" in st st

  1. Step 1

    Step 1

    CO 74 sts
    leaving 1 st in knit for selvedge at each end, work in k3 p3 rib for 2"
    switch to CC1 and st st. work 2 rows even.
    next row: k2, using CC1 and CC2 work skull from chart 10 times, k2
    continue to work chart for 5 rows.
    work 2 rows even in CC1
    work 2 rows in MC
    switch to CC3 and work 2 rows even.
    next row: k1, using CC3 and M work heart from chart 9 times, k1
    continue to work chart for 4 rows.
    decrease row: *k10, k2tog across*
    next row: work even
    decrease and checkerboard row: *k1 in CC2, k1 in CC1*, AT THE SAME TIME complete decrease row as: *k9, k2tog* (so every 10th stitch, you'll be doing k2tog with CC1 instead of just a knit with it).
    next row: * P1 in in CC2, p1 in CC2*, rep to end
    next row: * k1 in CC2, k1 in CC1 *, rep to end. checkerboard pattern finished.
    next row: work even in CC3
    decrease row: *k8, k2tog* across.
    next row: work even
    decrease row: switch to MC. *k7, k2tog*
    next row: work even
    decrease row: switch to MC. *k6, k2tog*
    next 2 rows: using MC and CC3 work 1, work chart 3 across
    next row: work even
    decrease row: *k5, k2tog*
    switch to CC1. *p2tog, p4* a row, *k3, k2tog* a row, *p2tog, p2* a row.
    decrease roq: switch to CC2. *k1, k2tog*
    cut yarn with 12" to tail and pull through rem sts.
    seam edge with mattress st and weave in ends.

  2. Step 2

    Earflaps - make two
    count in 12 sts from seam and pick up next 12 sts.
    work in moss (U.S. = seed) st for 4 rows even
    dec 1 at each end of every RS row until 4 sts rem.
    slip rem sts to 4mm dpn and work icord for 6". BO.

    optional - make pompom out of all 4 colours and attach to top of hat.
