Inspired by the tutorial on Cake Journal, I decided to make mini cupcake stands for the centerpieces of my wedding tables. However I was unwilling to spend the obscene price for the styrofoam or thick cake flats, as I had to make 8! I improvised... The mini lamp shades were $1 at a craft store and the cake circles are $5 for a pack of 10! Sweet deal!
Using Mod Podge, spray adhesive, or white glue, glue together two 8 inch cake circles and set aside to dry. Do the same with two 10 inch cake circles.
While these dry, cut circles of tissue paper large enough to cover each cake circle and wrap around to the edges.
Once your 8 inch cake circles are secured, cover one side with a thick layer of Mod Podge or white glue. Lay your tissue circle over it and press with sponge brush. You will get a wrinkly texture. Add more glue around the edges, using the sponge brush to fold tissue around and seal to the back. Set aside to dry, I rested mine on top of pint glasses, sticky side up!
Depending on the look you want to achieve, you can now spray paint your tiers according to the can's directions. I used white, but now that the edges of the cardboard are sealed, any color will work! Make sure you work in a well ventilated area when spray painting your tiers!
If you want these to sparkle, now is the time for glitter! Add another layer of Mod Podge over your painted tissue top and sprinkle with glitter. Set aside to dry.
Now for the edges! Cut lengths of ribbon long enough to circle the outside edge of each tier. Using your glue gun, secure the ribbon around the edge of each tier.
Once these are dry, you are ready for assembly. Measure your tiers and mini lamp shades to find the center of each circle. I traced the shape of the lamp shades onto the tiers lightly with a pencil. Then secure the tiers to your base with hot glue.
*Note: If you want a taller stand, you could add another tier to the top (6 inches) or the bottom (14 inches). I wouldn't go higher though, or they won't be very strong!
