A perfect project for a beginner crocheter. These pumpkins are easy and fairly quick to make, just in time for fall.

    Step 1

Start by chaining 15. Then single crochet back loop only. This is the trick to make that ribbed look. Make about 35-37 rows. There is really not right or wrong amount of rows. Here is a quick formula: multiply your initial chains by 2.5 times and make that many rows. For example if you started with 10 chains, make 25 rows. This will give you a well rounded pumpkin. For a pumpkin that is more tall and sort of elongated, crochet less rows, to use the same formula if you started with 10 chains, crochet 20 rows (few less, few more is fine too)

When you are on your last row don't tie off yet. Fold your piece in half and join your last and first row by doing slip stitch in the back loop to front loop to keep the ribbed look. Fasten off at the end and you should have a tube.

With a yarn needle sew around the edge then pull of the yarn to gather the tube. Tie off. You will have something that looks like a hat.

Then sew around again but this time leave a little bit of an opening to insert a stem. I used a wine cork. Some other ideas for a stem: stick from your yard or local park, empty thread spools. If you want you can secure your stem with a hot glue gun.
