Using appliques for the hottest fall trend!
Military style is back for fall and I wasn't planning on joining the trend! Then, I saw Brooklyn Decker on the cover of September's Women's Health magazine and I was swayed. Yeah, it happens sometimes!

I didn't want my shirt to be totally plain, so I thought about ways to add something to it. I have loads of t-shirt scraps and using them up to do a camo applique came to mind. I did both reverse and regular applique on the shirt.

Hanes has a line of Camo Collection T-shirts that would have been perfect for this project, but they are so popular that they were sold out when I went to buy some. So I tried my hand at dyeing and was pleased with the results. You can see the tute on dyeing on my blog:

Believe or not, this project started out as a plain white XL t-shirt. I did everything: the dyeing, fitting, sleeve capping, neckline shape, double stitching and appliques. It equals madness! It's perfectly fine to get a shirt that is the right color and fit for you and just do the appliques. So I will start my project tute from the appliques.

Step 1
Place your t-shirt scrap over fusible interfacing and follow manufacturer's instructions on how to fuse the fabric. You'll need at least two different colors of scrap.
Step 2
Using tailor's chalk, freehand draw the shapes and cut out with fabric scissors. Pin the shapes to the t-shirt in the places you want. For reverse applique, you need to turn the shirt inside out and pin the shapes where you want. Do these first!
Step 3
Using a zigzag stitch, sew all the way around the applique.
Step 4
When you're finished sewing them all down, turn the shirt over. Pinch the green fabric and pull up to separate it from the applique, so you won't cut all that hard work. Cut a hole with your snips.
Step 5
Follow the outline of your zigzag stitch to cut away the green fabric.
Step 6
Now, turn your shirt over and pin and sew your regular appliques in the places you want to your shirt. You can overlap for a cool effect!
Step 7
Now rock it! It was hard work!
