Bring a little Americana into your kitchen, the biscuit emerged as a distinct food type in the early 19th century, before the American Civil War. African American cooks created a quick, easy and cheap to produce addition for their meals that required no yeast
1
What you will need for the biscuits, for the English out there I used strong bread flour and plain and it worked just fine :)
2
Add all dry ingredients to your mixer..
both flours
salt
baking soda
baking powder
blend for a few seconds to combine.
3
Add butter and shortening (suet) blend until it looks like sand
4
Then add your buttermilk until the mixture comes together into a soft ball of dough.
So that is your basic American style biscuit dough, you can just cut it into small rounds and have plain biscuits but I am going to make monkey bread with mine! As follows......
5
Pre heat oven to 175oc
Grease a pan, I didn't have a regular bundt tin so used this one which worked fine.
6
Add 1 cup of white or brown sugar plus a teaspoon of cinnamon to a bag, toss in your cut up pieces of biscuits and shake until they are well covered.
7
Once covered take the out of the bag and place in tin.
8
In a small saucepan melt 1/2cup of butter with 1 cup of brown sugar, add a little vanilla to taste.
Save a little back of this mixture to drizzle over when cooked.
9
Pour the mixture over the biscuits and cook for 30-35 minutes
10
When cooked drizzle of the remaining butter/sugar mixture, I also added Pecan nuts, it is Monkey bread after all! Enjoy warm with your monkey :)
