Fabric help!!

So I'm trying to make a pirate costume before halloween (one week to go, I know I didn't leave myself much time) and I found an amazing pattern for a skirt and I'm all set to go except for one thing. Fabric is expensive!!
I was wondering if anyone knew of any alternatives to taffeta? I love the sheen and slight stiffness of the fabric but it costs so much and I am broke D:
This is slightly urgent as I am going fabric shopping in the next two days, but anything suggestions help! Thanks!!

Thrift stores for nets/curtain materials.Or think laterally with what's available in clothing.

I'd make a run to the local thrift store and check out their old prom dresses for something.

I went to my local bedsheets/pillows/curtains store, its closing down, and boy is it still expensive! The local expensive fabric shop is cheaper, the bedding store isn't worth it unless its under £5.

Sometimes nylon taffeta is available which is much less expensive than silk taffeta.
