Bag for University...

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a new university course next year and I really need a bag to carry all my stuff. I have been using a messenger bag all this year but I'm too lazy to swap everything from my messenger bag to a handbag when I'm going somewhere other than uni so I end up carrying a half empty (and not very attractive) messenger bag everywhere with me.

So I'm looking for a bag that can double as a bag for uni, but cute enough to be a handbag too. Obviously, I'm a uni student so have next to no money so want to put the sewing skills to use for this. But I can't find a pattern/tutorial for something that would be right for me.

It probably needs to be big enough to carry my macbook and some books, pencils etc. I'd also like it to have internal pockets for my phone, keys etc because I can never seem to find them in a big bag! Also I'd like for it to have a secure way of closing... I dont like the idea of having an open bag (like most tote bags) just for the possibility of dropping things etc.

I'm pretty specific on what I want! Does anyone have any ideas/links to something that might suit me??

Thankyou!

Why not make a bagliner thingy?
Make a smallish zipped pouch with pockets for keys/phone etc that you can swap between bags. That way you CAN change bags quickly - all you need to do is swap your little pouch containing everything in & out.

I'm with Bindiibabe. One of my good friends uses the above system and it really works.
I have an "Ag" bag made in Seattle from recycled tires. It has a small hook inside to hang my keys from.If your designing/making your own bag it's really great and handy for personal safety to add this feature.

Don't buy just look at product ideas.I have a Haversack. It was a give away to a house guest who went to a Microsoft conference. He didn't want to take it back to UK so it now lives with me.

Thats a really good idea. I'll have to compromise what I keep in the internal bag and what i then carry or goes separately into a bag otherwise the inner bag may not fit in my handbag for the weekend! hehe! I'm also going to have a go at sketching something that might suit for both weekdays and weekends... I'll let you know how I go! Thanks for the ideas so far Happy
