Advice how to create this demin look?

Hey everyone! I found a pair of demin shorts with an image of a skull on them. The image looks like it is 'distressed' into the fabric. The shorts are pretty pricey so I want to try and do this on a pair of old shorts I have at home but I can't figure out I would achieve this look. The image is here -

So any suggestions or advice on how I can do this would be GREATLY appreciated as I very eager to get started on it Happy Thanks in advance!

How i would do it is draw out the skull onto the shorts then using really fine embroidery scissors cut the warp threads, then remove them (probabily using tweezers). I'm assuming that it will take a long time and you would need to leave space for the frayed bits.

Hope that helps.

I did this! I mean, not the one in the picture...but a distressed skull. I used a seam ripper to rip the blue threads. I did this on a back pocket. I also ironed a patch on the back to keep the skull from fraying.
