Cutting a sweater

Hello. This is my first time here and I need some help. I've been reading about repurposing sweaters into a child's sweater dress, and I'm eager to try it out. My question is this: after you cut a sweater, how do you keep it from unraveling? Is there some special stitch you use along the edges??

Thanks!

If you use a wool sweater and felt it , it wont ravel.Other than that I don't much about it.I hope some one will be able to give you some help.

Ps.Welcome and hope you enjoy...smile

The only thing I would suggest is maybe put a stitch through it first and THEN cut the wool kind of alongside the stitch? That's just a guess, other than I'm afraid I can't help you.

I was taught to always zig zag the raw edges of my work. It helps slow the raveling.

On a sewing machine:
1. Trim the edges if you need to then zigzag them together or separately.
2. If you have more than one option for a zigzag stitch, choose the one that's smaller to the width of the raw edge.
3. Your stitch length should be a bit longer than an average straight stitch (about 1-2).
4. The tension may or may not have to be adjusted.
5. You do not have to reverse stitch at the beginning or end, but you can if you want to.

I've never tried this with hand sewing, I'm going to assume it'll do the same thing if done right. Hope this helped!
