Upcycled girls dress and bolero, just in time for back-to-school
This is an up cycled project. You can use what ever you have on hand. I used a size 10 boys tee and a women's size XL sweater. The final outfit will fit a girl size 8.

    Step 1

Gather your garments. The blue tee was in great shape, but the sweater had some staining. I didn't worry about the stains as I made the garments, which is why I placed appliqués and bedazzled the final result.

Note:Never forget to iron everything before, during, and after each step!

Cut the tee. I had to alter the final dimensions for fit, but if you were to start with a tee which already fit, skip this step.

The only thing I'd suggest is widening the next and maybe trimming the sleeves, but again, it isn't necessary if you're starting with a top that fits you great already!

Determine length for skirt. Keep in mind the current length of the tee as it will not be shortened.

Lay on a flat surface and cut across the middle.

Baste stitch the top of the skirt. Leave the bottom, or finished edge to be the bottom of the dress. This way there is no sewing or hemming.

Gather the top and pin carefully to the inside of the tee. You will want the bottom of the tee to overlap.

Carefully sew along the bottom of the tee. I sewed two lines along the exhisting tee's stitches.

I also used black thread for contrast and to add interest.

I finished the top by sewing the neck line with the same two black lines as the skirt, which I repeated on the arms after folding under the arm holes. After sewing the armholes I trimmed the extra fabric and ironed the entire top, again.

At this point you are done with the dress itself. I had some appliques lying around that I thought would look awesome with this outfit. I put the large one on the tee itself and two square ones on the skirt, front and back on the same side to cover up some light spots.

For the sweater on top I had to make the shoulders smaller. If you use a sweater that already fits you can just hem the bottom and sides.

To make it smaller across, I cut a chunk out of the middle and front, sewed the back together and then hemmed the entire outside. I finished the edge with some blue bias tape which matched the tee.

To finalize the sweater, I had to add some appliqués on the front to cover some staining. You will also note the creative use of the bedazzler stones and studs on the right. This was necessary to cover it up, but it does lend a funky vibe to the whole thing!

It just goes to show you that even a little stain can't stop a creative crafter!
