Roller Derby

We don't really have a sports board, so I'll post it here. I've been a fan of roller derby since I was little. My mum use to play me old movies of all the American matches and I always wanted to grow up to do it. It's totally come back in to fashion and I'm off to watch a match on Saturday - http://www.londonrollergirls.com/. I can't wait. Anyone else a fan?

I saw it once... It looks rlly cool but it's a really hard sport. When I saw it I saw all the girls punching eachother and stuff. XD but have allot of fun when you go to that match!

I would also like to know more about it. We have one in Charlotte, and they keep promoting it and running articles to get more excitement behind it, but all I've ever gotten about the point is that skaters skate around and score points. Points for what? I wish I knew more...

OH I love roller derby!!! One of my aunts friends, Jen, used to be one of the best in America [she has also been a criminal profiler working for the FBI, an Artist, and a bunch of random awesome things]. I used to watch all the old matches, and it seemed so awesome. I've kind of wanted to try it.

what exactly is a roller derby? I've heard of it but have no idea of what it actually is. They don't have them here in Oz

There are two teams, usually girls [I havn't heard of any men teams, but its not impossible] and they are on a circular or ovular track. There are five girls from each team on the track at a time. 3 blockers, one pivot, and one jammer. The way to score points is in each jam [which is two minutes long] the jammer [who is the only one who can score points] tries to bypass and overlap the other team in that jam time. The lead jammer [which is the person who passes all pivots and blockers first during the jam] can deciede to end the jam whenever she wants before the two minutes are overby signalling to the referee. Each game is either 2-30 minutes periods, or 3-20 minute periods [it differs wherever the game is] Another way to score points is if someone gets sent to the penalty box, every time the opposing jammer passes it is another point. Happy and yea... theres tons more, but thats the basics.

omg, that is so strange, never heard of anything like that, originally I thought it was just a wacky name for some footy match or something. Well, I guess you learn something new everyday

I remember seeing male teams when it was originally out in the 80's, but I guess it went out of fashion after that. It seems to be punky girls who have brought it back now, which is awesome!

lol. Yea, I havn't seen any old roller derby video's, just the stuff from the 2000's. Happy

Its really fun, tons of action, tons of FISTS OF FURY! lol. THe way I always see it is like a 10 person boxing match on skates.

Its like the points and rules and winning are kind of second to the action factor. Thats the real focus.
