Tons of SEA GLASS!

So, let's talk about sea glass--do any of you use it, and if so, what for? Where do you procure it? Do you collect it yourself, or pay money for it? I know it's expensive (ish) to buy in the craft section of Walmart or Meijer in Michigan.... what about the rest of the world?

I ask because it is SOOOO easy to find sea glass in Israel, unfortunately (unfortunately because, though it's beautiful, it's terribly dangerous and irresponsible to throw glass onto the beach.... but I digress). In fact, I have 14 pieces sitting right in front of me that I collected within 5 or 10 minutes yesterday! I have white, red, green, blue, teal, seafoam, and even clear with wiring inside!

What to do with it? There is so much on the beach that I feel it would almost be a crime to not use it somehow. Also, I think there used to be a tile factory close by, because i found even more of what I'm calling "sea tile"!!

Thoughts? Am I just insane? ;)

xoxo

Hi Rachie......I used to collect it too when I was scuba diving. The smaller pieces I used to wire wrap to make pendants. I particularly liked those that have been completely smoothed by the sea. The larger pieces that I couldn't do much with I wire wrapped and hung at different levels in my window. Be careful they don't act as a lens though as they could start a fire......not too much of a problem in England where we don't get really hot sun! Lol

LOL- for the record I do exactly what Sheila does !
I use a pieces of wood and suspend beads and sea glass on wires to act as light catched in our vaulted ceiling house. As it's a rental this works well to hide the patchy walls.
I've also used sea glass to attach to art quilts and Inchies.
I actually use a big piece to spread glues it's just the right shape for my hand.I also met a lady one the beach once who was clearly collecting by colour.we spoke and she get jars of different sizes with different colours in each- I like that idea

I have a glass flower shaped plate in my room,It looks like its from sea glass, and I keep my rocks and sea glasses I brought home in it for decoration.
But now Im all inspired to make a light catcher! Happy

make some jewlery! we used to have tons of sea glass here in Connecticut (and Rhode Island), but with clean ups and the use of plastic you dont find it as much anymore! My mom has toms of jars of it sitting around, if you are looking to make some money (i think you were going to start an Etsy store weren't you?) you could sell there! You would be surprised what people will pay for it! Happy Good luck sweetie, make sure you show off your goods! Happy

Thanks! You know, I was going back and forth about trying to sell it, because I know you can run to Walmart and get it, but I wasn't sure if those who frequent Etsy are the type to buy it instead of going and getting it themselves. I guess that's a go! If it doesn't sell, I can always make it into something and sell it THAT way, lol. ;)

Thanks for the support--I wasn't expecting to get so much in this thread, as pertains to the shop. ;) Thanks for the inspiration!! :-D

I'm definitely itching to try some new crafts with the sea glass, and I will definitely post my creations! You all know me--I can't resist showing off. ;)

Would you be willing to swap some of it for an already made craft? I have a serving tray that I would love to mosaic with it!

Me and my bf collect it when we visit his parents in Dorset. We thought about making some kind of mobile to go in the window so that it catches the light.
