Steampunk costume ideas?

Well, I'm trying to compile a few of steampunk costumes for a con I'm going to in the summer. The thing I'm wondering about is how to age or vintage-ize my props, specifically my gun. I'm going as an airship pirate. Here's my plastic flintlock gun.

How can I steampunk this up?

This isn't something I've given a try yet myself, but there are some pretty cool steampunk projects on here- including these nerf guns

If you look (wade lol) through my favs I've added a few of what I think are the more interesting ones.

Paint is probably going to become your best friend (seriously). I'm not so sure on the process, but a layering of metallics and wood/rust tones are likely going to give you the look you're aiming for.

Not sure if these will be a lot of help, but here are 2 steampunk websites I've come across.

Good luck, and I hope you post pics when you're done. Happy

Airship pirate! cuuute. XD
For the metal parts of the gun you could use some paints from Games Workshop to give an older effect. Paint the metal parts Chaos Black and once dry add a few thin layers of a bright silver paint like Chain mail or brass colour paint. Then lightly use sandpaper to uncover a little of the black paint where the gun would get the most wear. I tried this on a plastic cover for a clock and it worked well. Possibly adding some buttons using polymer clay and brass switches or LEDs would be cool.
The gun looks pretty cool as it is tho Happy

This site has a couple of cute accessories and clothing

You should check out Threadbangers website http://www.threadbanger.com/blog as they have some costume ideas in amongst their tutorials. Also Flickr.com has quite a few Steampunk groups and some of the pictures of what people have worn to conventions are amazing. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much guys! It's so funny that you mention GW, Rachel as my boyfriend is an avid Warhammer 40K player and probably has some of those paints lying around.

I'm going to try out some of your ideas and I'll let you know how it goes. Btw, I'm trying out a preliminary steampunk costume outfit. I have the basic pieces (except for my corset which is MIA) that I'm going to put together. I suppose I'll let you see that too. Happy

OOHHH, I'm so glad you started this thread....I LOVE steampunk. I have just recently fallen into it's loving arms...I mean learned about it. I sort of accidentally got a few garments for my birthday that I am going to add to a costume I will eventually begin working on. My dad took me to Marshall's to shop for clothes, and we found this fantastic brown skirt...I didn't know what it was, but it just hooked me, and I had to get it. It's full lenght, and roushed (sp?) all the way up, with a roll down jersey knit waist. While I was trying that on, my dad found a light weight leather jacked, omg. He wanted me to check it out, and it's funky!! It's like...blackbrown? Next to brown it looks brown, next to black, etc. It's got a rubbed off edge, like a yellowed color. Lettuce edge from the collar down to all around the waist. Pockets on the front, and a leather sash....OOOh. I just love it. MUCH later, it hit me that they would be great for a steampunk costume!!!
I am also thinking about henpecking my fiance into letting me steam up his nerf shotgun...I think he'll say yes!
