lol, yep! i've had a lot of friends like that..

and i wish i could make those too..so sooo cute! but..i can hardly crochet a granny square (i take that back..mine turn into circles..wahhh!) so maybe i should just buy some? lol

and i started crafting when i was in my early teens..there was this indie designer girl that i thought was the bomb-diggity who made the most adorable clothes..i had never sewn in my life so i knew i could never make clothes so i started handsewing things like pillows and stuff..to this day i still can't sew, lol..but i'm saving up for a sewing machine and lessons..we have an awesome little sewing room here in my town that has beginner classes so i'm super excited! it'll be a dream come true..my wardrobe won't know what hit it!

at least...that's the plan..

Haha, yeah, I'm really proud that my skirt came out right. It took 2 tries but I got it! hah.

I had a crochet needle, but I think it got given away or thrown out, because I can't find it anywhere Happy I might try to start doing amigurumi and crochet while I wait for my poor sewing machine to get fixed =X

I'm still not very good at sewing, but I'm getting better. I think I'm having delusions of grandeur (why yes I have been waiting for a month to use that) in regards to what I can/can't make. I'll try to start small but sometimes I'm like "THIS SHOULD BE EASY".

Although I got into knitting thanks to a friend of mine before the big "trend" hit, I am a fan of the vogue knits collection. And although some of the patterns are very spur of the moment trendy (which doesnt make sense unless you own a machine knitter), some of the patterns are a little bit more timeless. Some of the sweaters they have are amazing, and I own a lot of vogue knits magazines that are years old, but still have items in them I want to knit when I graduate to something harder (going to start my first sweater this fall Happy..interestingly enough..lol from vogue knits)

I think its nice that people are getting into crafting, even if it is trendy. People are learning skills that they may use again later on in life. Look at the DIY revolution that occurred with Generation T (not going to lie, I hopped on that bandwagon...although I guess I am still riding the bandwagon years later...). I think its cool that people are becoming inspired to make things themselves instead of buying it, no matter how short lived the trend or inspiration.

How strange, crafting is a lifelong thing really, as far as I'm away, knitting has not really been in fashion, making clothes is in fashion atm, but I like making clothes as a way of expressing my inner self and let my creative thoughts flow, rather than copying something I like from a shop or catalouge.

Hm. That's wierd. I mean, it's not a BAD thing, certainly not. You're learning a new skill and that's always useful. But I always looked at crafting as, well, a hobby - something that will bring you SELF fufillment, not just a fad to move you up in the popularity alumni. I guess I was always known as the "crafty girl" in school, but I was never popular for it (because I was never popular: I was the loser loner). I crafted as a means of escapism. Then when the "popular" crowd saw what I was up to, they'd hang all over me, asking me if I could make this for them and if they could do that, and in the end, they'd get more attention drawn to them than me. "Always the designer, never the model."

But maybe your friend will stick with it, even when it becomes "out of style". Tongue

I never really got into knitting and crocheting much: I only know one technique (the basic beginner technique). Knitting and crocheting is a challenge for me, because I'm left-handed and I have to do everything in the opposite. That, and I'm a very visual person (that is, I learn better when I'm actually watching somebody else doing it), so book tutorials don't really cut it for me. : /

I think I'm going to stick to sewing. Happy

I think that what happens is crafts come into peoples conciousness when they become 'trendy' so they pick them up. I like to think that even if they do it at first as a trend thing they then find something they love as a life long thing, eventually, maybe after trying all the trends. I was strictly beader of 25 years til I found crochet cos of amigurumi trend. Now its my favorite thing and I've moved on to other projects and I'm damn good at it too. Having a crafty thing to pick up is lovely, don't begrudge anyone having it or how they came to it.

I know this topic is a year old but just wanted to add since it struck a chord with me....

I like when people jump on crafting bandwagons..then suppliers start making more and better things and prices go down due to huge demand...thats when you build up your stash Happy

I agree about having greater access to better supplies, my only problem with 'trendy' crafters is when I've been doing the same type of craft for years and years then automatically get lumped into the 'hipsters' that are jumping on the bandwagon...hello I've been knitting/crocheting/making paper goods for years because it's fun and satisfying not because it's cool!!

This thread is great....I came to crafting out of necessity. I know that sounds weird but I lived 50 miles from the nearest city and the 'local' town was 15 miles away. I learnt to knit, crochet, sew, repair and bead things. One of my favourite things was to make the gaskets for my dad's engines out of waxed paper and fixing the generator....Lol

very Anne of Green Gables or even Little Women. I actually get a huge kick out of it. Amy March collects limes because they are all the latest fashion and it's her vanity that gets her beaten by the school teacher and taken out of school by her mother.

Anne Shirley goes on a whole passage about how one of Diana's cousins was teaching them a new knit stitch that no one else in Avanlea knew and they were going to keep it a secret just for them and she talks about a thousand other trends that pass through her little school like puffed sleeves and button rings.

Let your trendy friend have her phases (really though she's late on the bus, with the knitting thing but whateve) She doesn't hurt anyone for them. They are trivial and silly and eventually she'll get bored with it and move on to some other source of amusement.

Well... for every group of people that are trend crafting... there are a few that get really into it... stick with it. I know personally I got into crafting because of my grandma... but I have friends and siblings that started out with Scrapbooking or Knitting because it was popular... and now they make amazing projects of all kinds! I mean... a lot of people wouldn't even think to craft if someone hadn't shown them how neat it was!

I love it when the 'trendy crafters' get bored of the latest craft trend. They usually dump their materials and equipment at my local second hand store......yum...cheap crafting stuff for me....Lol

I got a bag of over 50 pairs of knitting needles, needle sizer, about 20 crochet hooks, circular needles, row counters and 1000gms of yarn for £5. It was all new stuff Happy

the problem is you are defining "crafter" incorrectly....to me a crafter is someone who copies it straight from a book or pattern..identically...never changes anything.

Myself and everyone Ive seen on here (btw..AMAZING site..i found you guys quite by accident only a couple days ago) I consider artists....or even "craft artist" if that suits your fancy more. when you use the basic idea or the pattern even but you make it your own by adding (or taking away)...mixing things up, etc.
