Suggestion: Copycat/Theif Alert button

I have seen quite a few projects on here that consist of nothing more than STOLEN images. I think there should be a button on everyone's project page that we can use to alert that the posted projects is not someone's idea, nor work.
I don't think it's fair that someone can steal someone's projects and get credit for it.

There is the possibility that people are unclear about the little box you must click before you upload stating that all images are yours, but seriously I don't think so...

Here is an example that *Aurore* caught.

Real person

Good idea!

It's so important people understand they shouldn't be posting other people's things without permission. I'll add a button to flag projects with any issues.

And, I'll look into the serving tray project...!

I think you'll find that a few of that person's projects are *ahem* borrowed. She's only 12 or 13 and an adult would struggle with some of the stuff she's posted. Though she could be a prodigy.....

I suspect if she really is so young she doesn't understand that it's not ok to post other people's work on her page. She does seem to generally do crafts as she appears to have taken part in a swap but probably doesn't have access to a camera to post her own projects. Who knows. I think treading lightly when it comes to posting thievery is good though. People pass ideas around all the time. SLOABN admitted to being inspired by other crafters when she made her soap making tutorial a couple weeks ago (i.e.- she got the tutorial from someone else).

It's a good idea but difficult to control totally. We've had discussions before about people using images that weren't theirs. I'm not so bothered about images, more when a project is a complete rip off of others work....some to the level of being copied and pasted from another person with little or no changes...ummm...I remember those boots...glad that the original owner got the credit eventually.

I have recently changed my projects & profile info to state where I have been inspired by others I have included links and other info.

**Avoiding paranoia and accusations of plagerism towards myself...Lol**

Those patterns and design elements I have created I have given my permission to use for personal use. Any other use I have asked individuals to contact me. It probably won't stop plagerism but may make people thing twice.

There will always be unscrupulous people who will try different ways to get round things so it's a case of reporting anything that looks dodgy.

Being inspired by someone is totally different from stealing their pictures and step by step paragraphs. If she is mature enough to steal all that AND make a step by step tutorial using the original persons words she is DEFINITELY old enough to understand what she is doing. This is just as bad as plagiarism if you ask me. Paper or electronic it's the same concept.

I have seen other instances where someone basically steals an image and EXPLAINS how they think the person created it. I believe this also counts as stealing since they do not specify that the work is not their own and take credit for it.

I just think having the opportunity to flag such posts would be a good way to ensure that CU&K remains the site it is. I love the fact that most posts are original! I think it's very important that this creativity is given the recognition it deserves. Also if MORE people start passing off a "professionals" work as their own it may intimidate some crafters from posting their own projects.

did anyone tell cat about this? Also taking someones tut and photos is considered stealing copyright by law.

maybe where she is young, she doesn't understand it as well as most. But she should be told nicely not to post work thats not her own.

@ Felicity...I totally agree with your comments about using an image and trying to explain how they think is was made being theft.
I agree too that some people will be put off from posting projects because of the professional work being passed off as their own.
I've seen baking/cooking images that have been 'professionally' produced. Food doesn't photograph well so this didn't bother me too much. That's what I meant about use of an image. Sorry I didn't make that bit clearer. My gripe with that is that it should be made clear where the image came from.
It does bug me though when I trawl through pages of new projects that appear to be complete rip offs.
I've seen stuff where they are either a creation only or the how to doesn't make sense and the individual who posted cannot answer questions from the comments section.

An alert button is a good idea.

Maybe there could be some kind of short statement about acceptable/unacceptable behaviour when people sign up to the site. Anyone who is really interested in posting their stuff won't be put off by it.

The thing I don't understand is why the need to post other peoples projects and pictures and pass them off as her own?
It's not as if it's compulsory to post creations or how-to's !

What I don't understand is how people wouldn't get it, you have to tick as box stating that the work is totally your own, surely if they know it's not they would know from that not to post it?!?!

I've used other pictures because, like it's been mentioned, my camera SUCKSSSS. and I wanted the idea conveyed. Not like you know, magazine quality pictures though.

I haven't actually ran into a fake (or at least noticed it). but this alert button could come in handy! I wouldn't want someone rippin' me off :c
