Journalism

I'm 13 and I love thinking about the future. I use to want to be an environmental lawyer, but I might want to become an environmental journalist now. I love animals, writing ,and traveling, so I'm wondering if I should become one. I was also wondering about classes I should take in high school and college.

Law school is really expensive and takes a lot of time and energy to get through. Journalism is mostly about being able to write very well and being able to keep someone's attention. You'll want to get into the best writing classes you can get into in high school.

As for college, my advice is to start out at a community college and stay there until you know for certain what you want to do. I took nothing but art classes in high school and my first 3 years of college, but after my third year of college, I got really sick of it and now I am studying to become a historian instead... so I now have $20,000 of school debt from pursuing art and really wish I'd have switched to History earlier.

When I was your age I was certain I wanted to be an art teacher. That's changed for certain. Just keep your mind open because it's bound to change.

High school is where kids go to figure out what they think they want to be... college is where people go to find themselves and figure out what they really want to be.

Monika! History is one of my faves! That; and Philosophy, which has lead me to thinking about Journalism and Fiction writing. I have 3 Novels going....lol HUGE TASK!
Epic- Write a lot of essays just for fun... you could try to get them published as you go. Don't be afraid that nobody would publish a 13 year old. If you know what you want to say people will listen. Also read essayists they can help you come up with an essay (your own opinion) and it can develop into a really good story and get you researching.
There are also websites that you may have to pay for.. I'm not sure but they have unlimited essays and magazines etc. with all the topics you are looking for. I've never gone for one (intimidated probably), but I hear that they are wonderful.

Contact some of the environmental groups you follow and ask how you could help. Age isn't always a factor when it comes to things like this, in fact they may be really impressed that at your age you're taking an initiative to get involved and have a pretty strong idea of what career you'd like to get into.

Also, if there's a specific topic you'd like to write about or a certain person/group you'd like to interview then you may want to contact Cat about including a piece in Snippets and get in touch with them about it. (I recently did my first interview with Snippets and got to interview someone I truly admired so that may be something you want to look into as well.)

As for school, you'd probably want to get involved in journalism/photography classes. When you're in high school you can take college courses and get dual credit. You should take journalism/photog. related courses then as well. I'd talk with your school counselor or principal about it. You should talk to your current counselor about this and he/she would probably be able to help you out maybe get you an internship somewhere.
Btw, I think you’re an extremely admirable person for not only knowing what you want to do with your life but actually taking the next step to see what avenues you can pursue in order to expedite the process.
