Do you know what a penny rug is or have anyone ever made one?

If you don’t know what a penny rug is then I will fill you in on what I have learned.

First of all a penny rug isn’t actually a rug at all but was used as decorative covers for beds, tables, wall hangings, pillows, and mantles. Penny rugs started back during the civil war times and were made from scraps of wool or felted wool from old clothing, blankets and other wool items. Women use coins of different sizes for their templates to create circles and then sewed each one by hand with a blanket stitch onto their chosen base fabric. They also used old mats, rugs, old burlap bags and feed sacks for backing. I hope you crafters enjoyed a bit of craft history and for some great examples just google image penny rugs.

Now that I know what they are I can’t wait to try and make one for my craft table.
