Muslin, quilter's cotton fat quarters, clearance fabrics. You could even test out stitches on clothes or fabric from a thrift shop.

Thanks for the reply. Ill have to see if there are any decent fabric shops in the area. I have been to JoAnn but they are usually pretty expensive. A friend mentioned Hancock Fabrics, so I might check that place out.

Hancock has about the same prices as JoAnns, but they have a different selection and usually have cheaper fat quarters ($1-2 for a 21x18" section of fabric). Look online for coupons because those will usually save you 40% on one item.

Online like on their websites, or do you know a good place for coupons?

You could also check charity shops for flat bed sheets or even pick them up new, if you know somewhere that sells them reasonably priced. I'm afraid I only know UK shops so that wouldn't be much help.

The stores' websites have coupons that you can use online or print them out and use them in the stores.

I like the advice from Monika but would just like to add that at thrift shops, you could not only get sheets but also curtains and there is a lot of fabric in both. You could do that for practicing and go to Joann's Fabric and sign up for their sale paper. In it, each month is a 50% off coupon. (Or maybe it's 40% now.) Good Luck!

I always go to thrift stores for fabric. Quite often I'll find huge chunks of fabric for less than $10.
