Sewing on a patch?

My boyfriend wants me to sew a patch onto a hat for him and I have never actually sewn a patch to anything before, so I was wondering if anyone knew a good method to do so. I am going to do it by hand, so if anyone could recommend a stitch or any tricks to make it look good I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

what is the hat made of? I'd say just use running stitch like this - - - - - - - - - although the stitches will be visable that way...I'm no good at describing sewing!!!

I actually don't know exactly what the hat is made out of, but it is a typical baseball hat. The patch is one of those thicker, raised ones, like one that a girl/boyscout would earn.

When I was sewing patches on my sash for Brownies (*gets all nostalgic* haha) I would oversew them round the edges, but make sure I put the needle up and down through the fabric just underneath the edge of the badge so that the stitches wouldn't be visible.
I'm not sure how clear that is to understand, I'll see if I can find a diagram.

ooooooo I thought you meant like there was a bit missing out of the hat...id just follow the way the stitches are on the edge of the patch like Izzy did

I actually kind of LIKE the way stiches look [if you'll notice on my PATCH PANTS Happy, I actually do themes with my stiches. like on the Charlie and the Chocolate factory, I switched off the color of the string so around the entire thing, it was rainbow stiches Happy ] But uh.. I would just to a stitch thingy thing.. ya know.. the thingy thing [I'm a self taugh sewer... no fancy seamstress lingo and whatnot] lol. Eh... ... the one where .... I DON'T KNWO HOW TO EXPLAIN IT, its what I did on all my patches... so yea... if you care that much. lol

when i hand sew a patch i use a little heat and bond on the backside to hold it in place
the stitch really depends on the type of fabric your useing

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I think I know what everyone is talking about, lol, I know that it is really hard to describe a stitch in words. Anyway, pretty much what everyone said is what I assumed, so I'll let you all know how it turns out.
