knitting - casting on Question!

Ok, so i've found a good video on youtube to help me cast on, BUT i'm a little confused if the slip knot you use at the beginning is classed as a stitch or not?
I wanted to try practicing at a pattern but don't want to bugger it up before i've even started the knitting by casting on the wrong number of stitches!!
Thanking you for help Happy
