Hair Emergency

I've been dyeing my hair for the past 4 years now, generally every 3 months and I've never had problems before. Every time I dye my hair I bleach it first because normally I change the colour completely. I've never had a situation where my hair falls out or anything like that until now. I wanted to make my hair platinum blonde, so I bleached it as usual, with the intetnion to put white toner on afterwards. I was devastated when I washed the dye out. My hair is already naturally thin and there's not a lot of it and literally almost half of my hair has fallen out! I'm so upswt! I've bought loads of hair rescue treatments to use to try to save the rest of my hair.

Then, after shedding many tears over my damaged hair, when I finally managed to comb through my hair, I put the white toner in. After the average developing time, I wash the dye out and it stained the majority of my hair purple! I'm so mad! Luckily with the way it came out it looks like it was intentional.

Does anyone have advice on hair damage repair or how to get rid of my purple stains?

The only way I can think of to get rid or the purple stains would be to bleach it - buy that would only damage your hair further. You could dye it darker, but make sure to use a non-permanent dye without peroxide or ammonia. Sounds like your hair really just needs a rest. My hair started crumbling away from too much bleach a few years ago and it was back to normal until I decided to bleach my ends again Happy

With regards to the damage, a trim should help a great deal as it will stop split ends moving up the hair. I usually use Aussie 3 minute miracle reconstructor or whatever it's called. Not sure in which countries it's available. Putting serum in your hair after washing is good aswell as staying away from hair dryers and straighteners. Also I would suggest conditioning your hair twice after washing and using an intensive conditioning treatment at least once a week.

This usually works for me, hope it helps Happy

You can try colour washing which involves mixing your bleach with shampoo instead of developer. This mixture doesn't process so quickly, so it makes it slightly easier to keep an eye on. It's still bleaching, but not sooooo nasty. Just remember to really really really rinse it out properly AND shampoo out the bleach with a really gentle shampoo (I use baby shampoo).

Don't bleach yor hair anymore! Try washing your hair out with detergent tomorrow to get rid of the color. Leave it alone as much as possible. I know that will be hard because you'll want to change it- but honestly if you can let it rest for a few months- that would be the best thing you can do for your hair. Also make sure you are deep conditioning your hair every week. There are many ways of doing this but I find olive oil the most effective. I would also go to your local drug store and purchase some prenatal vitamins. They help with hair growth and should help add some of the health back into your hair.

The purple toner is meant to kill brassy tones that happen when people bleach their hair from a darker color. The same thing happened to me when I went from black to white last spring, and it'll just take a few days to fade and wash out, leaving your hair very white.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm gonna be using hair treatments every day for a couple of weeks to see what happens.

Luckily most of the purple washed out in the shower this morning, and my hair isn't falling out as much anymore. I'm going to cut my hair sometime this week to get rid of my split ends.

Here's how it looks now:

From what I can see your hair looks fine now, nice and shiny. Provided you give it a nice break and just dye the roots when needed for a while it'll go back to normal pretty sharpish.

Nexxus makes a split end mender. There is no way to really "mend" ends once they're are split but it does help add the protein you need. If you stay away from too much blow dryer and flat iron heat your hair should get healthy faster.
Maybe look into any local beauty colleges and see if they have low cost deep conditioner services. Good Luck!

My hair has been recovering remarkably well! I've been using Drench's shampoo, conditioner, hair styling spray and hair rescue sachets for damaged and dry hair. My hair isn't falling out now and my friend who also dyes her hair told me she wishes her hair could recover as fast as mine

I believe protein shampoo is supposed to help (correct me if i'm wrong, I probably am). I've never used it but apparently it helps =]
Or a conditioning cap.

By the sounds of it your hair has pretty much recovered.

I can barely get a brush through my hair when I bleach! Once i've put the dye on it goes soft again.

Hello Darling,

I would use a deep conditioner every end of the week and get a leave-in conditioner. This will hydrate your damaged hair so it will produce more nutrients to repair it. I would not dye or bleach your hair any time soon to let your hair heal. If you find a leave-in conditioner, find one with no alcohol or sulfates, those chemicals strip the hair of its natural moisure. Its all about moisture now to help it repair. Dont worry, it might takea while, but it will heal. I have cury hair and have used many chemical treatments to try to straiten it. After I faced the fact that it was terribly damaged, I decided to go natural. Been growing it out for two years now! Good luck with your hair journey!
How this helped!

This happened to my sister-in-law - she'd been dyeing her hair for years and years, bleaching it really light then putting in colours, and one day it just suddenly got all damaged and lifeless, for no reason. She's had hairdressing training, so she was really careful about it too, and never left the bleach on for too long. Her solution was to stop bleaching it, and let her hair grow out completely several times before even thinking of re-dyeing it, and I'd try that. Lots of conditioner and hair care stuff (the Panteen 3minute miracle, and the Panteen Night Repair Serum are AMAZING, if you can find them!), and it should help!

i know this is late, but if you have color in your hair you are attempting to lighten or get the excess out because of uneven coloring. Wash your hair with GREEN dish soap. It has to be green (palmolive). It is a color stripper.. One or two washed and the excess color should lighten up...

Palmolive, really? That's interesting. I just bleached my hair from dark brown (dye) until it got light enough for the roots to be dyed white, but even after 4 rounds of bleach, 3 boxes of extra light ash dye, and a round of brass banisher, there are still some yellowy strands.

I might have to try that.
